Powerglide - I know you clearly stated synthetic, so don't get mad at me!
But you can consider also a 15-40 'diesel' oil.
Save $ and might be better for you.

wow! just wow! lol... could you imagine if that were true...

1 quart was a typo.

gee, ya think?

Grew up with a 70 240 and loved the car. Based on the 1600cc 4 banger, same pistons rods, oil pump, etc.

A super durable engine, mine at 200k miles had no ridge at the top of the cylinder and original cross hatching still visible. He's right, the bore does not wear!

You need a thicker oil for this car, I like that 15w-50 recommendation for Florida.

yep, they added 2 cylinders to the 510 engine. legend has it nissan/prince copied a mercedes engine design, mb timing belt even fits. and nissan didn't stray far from that design since a ka24 oil pump and pistons will fit the L-series, same with the naps-z engine. even vg30 valve springs and pistons will swap.

i'd try a synthetic 40wt
redline 5w-40 or 10w-40
or
rotella or mobil1 5w-40
save the 15w-50 for the summer

If I had a 240Z-280ZX,I`d use either RP 15W40 or RP 20W50 if I was going synthetic. I`d LOVE to find a mint condition 69 240Z!!!!!!

Well...the '77 5 speed transplant went well. As suggested earlier. It will probably have a positive impact on oil comsumption. I'v used the Mobil 1 15W-50 in the past with good results. Oil consumption was not dramitcally lower. If I was to try Redline, which viscocity is most likely to reduce consumption---5W-50, 10W-50 or 20W-50 Full Synthetic? Incidentally. All 3 grades have an outstanding NOACK rating of 6%.

Did you know that in japan they were called "Fairlady's". The Datsun USA president had a hard time convincing they guys back home that you could not sell a performance car in the US called a Fairlady. The early shipments came off the freighter with Fairlady emblems, which were removed and replaced with 240Z emblems. Very neat cars, unfortunely here in Indiana nice examples are rare. Back in the 80's my neighbor had a right hand drive Fairlady.

The 15w40 conventional is my thought too if the burning doesn't stop.
Schaeffer's makes a blend 15w40 that you might want to consider if the synthetic is a must.
BMW makes a 10w60 but don't know the cost.

My '76 280Z was cocoa brown w/black leather. Yours?

Yep, all Z cars were called the Fairlady Z in Japan up until the current 370z. My personal favorite though, was the ('89-96 in Japan), '90-'96 Z32 Fairlady Z (300ZX) Twin Turbo...

The car is Porche Gaurds Red on black vinyl.

I had a 1990, 5 speed 2 seater. Bought it new in Aug of 1989. It replaced the 1985 Mazda RX-7 GLS-SE that I bought new in Aug. of 1985. Truthfully, I like the Mazda better. The Z did NOT feel like the WORLDBEATER it was touted to be. Sure it was faster than the Mazda---but NOT by much. It has brake (rotor) issues. It was VERY noisy (tire and road) inside the car at speed. Had a LOUSEY stock Bose stereo and was not particularly fuel efficient. I have more fun with the 76 than any car I'v owned except for the possible exception of the 1967 Big Block 4 speed Corvette coupe I owned in the 1990s..!
