I'm looking at a 02 F250 PS Lariat crew 4x4. Overall the truck is in good condition on the outside. It has new tires, batteries, glow-plugs, ranch-hand, normal routine front end work recently completed. I have driven it and it has a pull. Thinking a new steering box might correct that.

The truck has 270k miles.

I am building a dump trailer and trying to acquire a tractor for my property. I would not be using the truck as an everyday driver.

I have a number in my head that I want to offer for the truck (8200.00). Just curious what you all think a 10+ year old 3/4 ton pick-up in good condition but with high miles would be worth?

I'm definitely no PS expert but I do know the 7.3s are the better (much better) regarded versions of that motor. In recent years the PS engines became 6.0 and 6.4 L and have had problems.

And would 270K be "high miles" for a PS engine, assuming proper maintenance? Of course, other aspects of the vehicle also have 270K, too.

I too have heard the 7.3 is rock-solid.

Mileage is quite high -- what was the typical usage? Lots of highway miles I assume? Off-roading? Towing? Racing? Is it modified in any way?

If it pulls to one side you need to get the tyre shop inspector to confirm if the tracking etc is out of whack and why. A good look with the truck up on ramps for signs of a repair or serious off road grounding is a must. Also if everything looks good, then start checking the CV and 4WD system for some kind of resistance. Might just be a simple bad tyre or wheel bearing BUT it could be something far more expensive.
Steering boxes are very reliable, but there are a lot of other suspension and transmission items that can cause a pull. The worst case is that the frame is bent, in which case it might be a write off. Are the tyres showing any uneven wear??

The pull could be as simple as a Radial tire pull. I would not spend $8K of my money on a used truck with nearly 300K on it. The engine may ok but the rest of the truck is nearing the end of it's life.

The 02 PSD is a rock solid combo. Check blue smoke on startup, could be injector O-rings... an easy fix for most, ball joints.. our 99 PSD got 30k miles out of the JUNKY motorcrafts, when replaced I went with Moog greasables. Trans, service is key here, I would service the 4R100 every 25K if not sooner with a HIGH quality synthetic fluid. If it has an aftermarket air filter RUN, don't walk away. they can "sand" the turbos and cylinder walls. Cam position sensors -a 5 minute fix BUT can leave to dead in the water. Check to see if it has been changed in the last year with the updated version. Coolant additive, has it been used.. it needs to be used or cavitation "could" happen.
Summary:
Blue smoke on startup- look at injector orings
Ball joints
Trans service WITH records. If not jew them down the cost of a GOOD rebuilt trans.
NO aftermarket air filter PERIOD..
Cam position sensor
Coolant additive

i would not waste money on a lariat for a farm truck. look for something older, even dip into the mid 90s for a F250 or F350 powerstroke. should be able to find one in the $3000-4000 range.
