There is an ongoing scam to create rear end accidents like this. ABout 364 days from now your wife will be sued for several hundred thousand dollars by the person she rearended. And the sad thing is, your insurance company will pay up because your wife was "at fault". A warning went out in PA several years ago about people doing this and asked all drivers to report anything suspicious. Good luck.

I have always been told that if u think the person stoppped short on purpose u are suppose to tell ur insurance right away so they keep an eye out for if its a scam. If u dont tell them they tend to get away it. But if u put ur insurance company on alert and they try to scam u u get your deductible back and rates dont go up

my 2 year old elantra touring was just totaled in may.
Driver texting told the cop "I suddenly slammed on my brakes for nothing"

My version.. I decelerated over 10seconds coming to almost a complete halt/5mph to avoid geese in the road.

The cop asks me were they flying or something...

No they were just waddling back and forth I saw them half a mile off... and slowly decelerated to about 5mph.

Was funny the police report had some stick figure ducks on it.

according to the akron police it was a 25mph accident..

It was more like a 45-50mph accident. I never even saw the car that hit me.. I was in the center lane of a divided 4lane city road speed limit 35 but everyone goes 45-50 on it. I'm sitting there
craning my head around trying to see where the flippin geese are.. and SCREEECH BOOM
It blasted me out of my lane and up onto a curb.

I doubt too many cars rearended at 25 (while still moving) get totalled.

Still dealing with neck and back pain... work is the worst they act like unless you are missing an arm you should be 110% every day.

Last winter I slammed into a concrete pole in my Corvette at only about 10 or 15 mph and both airbags deployed and I destroyed my hood and front end. Total damage was about $9500. They were very close to totalling the car out, but I insisted it be fixed.

We live in Pleasanton and we take side roads to make it to I680. We used to take the junction but both our blood pressures skyrocket with all the bizzare crazzies doing a dance from lane to lane we stopped taking the junction -- it is perhaps the most dangerous junction in the tri-valley.

The accident happened near Fremont coming down the Mission scales. The Bay Area highways are very dangerous and could raise the blood pressure for even a child.

I'm not familiar with the roadway, but did the thought of swerving into another lane or emergency lane come to mind instead of standing on the brakes?

I don't want to admonish your wife's decision, but for many scenarios, swerving is a better option (if possible).

Good question but unfortunately rush hr traffic towards work in a mess in Bay Area, all highways are packed. No way she could have veered into another lane, that is the nature of this world we live in!!

That's too bad. I had to do this once when there wasn't anywhere to go. Flat spotted all my tires on my old 94 Accord. Eventually had to replace them all. Stopped so hard the tranny went into neutral. Just a lapse in judgment or concentration is all it takes.

Luckily the guy behind me swerved and drove around a ditch to avoid hitting me. I thanked him when we got to the next light!

Recently my brother had another driver blow a stop and had no choice but hit. He knew he was going to hit so he turned his vehicle quick to avoid deploying the airbags on a early 2000's Saab. He knew he would total the car if airbags deployed.

My brother felt bad for the other driver. It was the kids 2nd day back home from a tour of duty in Iraq.

Totaling would have been better as he spent about $4000 on the vehicle in repairs thereafter on a turbo, head gasket and something else. He loves that car.

Absolutely. My wife was at fault but sad we have to pay for others unattentiveness on a freeway. My wife is a defensive driver and she did break hard but little too late, if I was behind the wheel it would have been a total. [/quote]

Not to sound cruel but your wife sounds like the unattentive driver..She is the one who hit the driver in front of her, doesnt matter what the circumstances are
