5w30 in a car spec for 0w16

I would personally run a 0w-20, just for the sake of easier to find oils.

I had the same thought for my new Accord hybrid. Honda has usually allowed thicker oils in hot climates like the Middle East or OZ. All the research for this engine shows 20 grade is the thickest they use and in Europe they recommend a 0w-16. I feel comfortable using a 20 grade in it. No turbo, port injection, and the ICE is on ~50% of the time means a return to 10k intervals for me.

I just got a 21 Prius prime. It has the 2zrfxe engine.
Owners manual recommends 0w16, my question is would 5w30 Pennzoil synthetic be a better choice for longevity?
In the manual it states " an oil with a higher viscosity ( one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions."

I'm not concerned about losing a few miles to a tank of fuel. I just don't want to put oil that is too thick if it may hurt the engine. I have read other countries allow thicker oils for the same engine, I don't know if the US model prime has a different oil pump that only will work with thin oil.
You just got your new Pruis. Why in the world would you want to jeopardize your warranty by using an oil which is not recommended?? I would wait till the warranty is over before trying your experiments.

Haven't people that have owned these said the oil often struggles to even get up to temp? I would just use what is recommended and worry more about taking a long drive with it once in a while like I do with my parents' Milan Hybrid...

Toyota makes very reliable engines so I have zero concerns about the 0/16. They also give those who want a thicker viscosity an out by that phrasing. I wouldn't go higher than a x/30.

probably so he better stay with what the manufacturer recommended

You missed my point. Driving with 5W30 in summer will cause CEL's and cam phaser issues, but 0W16 in the middle of winter won't?
That's just not true.

If it were mine, I would use 0W16, but there would be no harm done with 5W30. As @slacktide_bitog said, there would likely be no benefit either. I'm sure there are folks in other parts of the world using 20W50.

20 at the most. I believe the oil additives are the strength of modern oils.

If I had a Prius I'd probably use whatever was recommended by Toyota, how much high speed WOT driving are you really going to do?

This is coming from a thicky who puts 15w-40 HDEOs in my small 4 banger.
Every day Ion the way home from work I get on highway. On ramp has a sharp turn, and an extremely short lane before a bridge. The guard rail is all messed up. If you don't accelerate and merge fast it can be bad.
The highway seems to travel at about 75-80, the engine is turning pretty quickly. The answer to the question is it gets daily hard use.
