2024 Civic w/NA 2.0 - Honda recommends 0w-20 - Suggestions and thoughts?

I’d assume the car will tell me when to get the service done? The CVT fluid, is what I’m talking about
Yes it will. I did a drain and fill on my 17 accord cvt at 30K miles. (Bought used at 29K miles)
Did a 3X drain and fill with Amsoil CVT fluid at 32K mikes. A single drain and fill at 61K miles and will do another drain/fill around the 92K mile mark and every 30K thereafter

I wonder if the Amsoil stuff is Honda approved.

The maintenance minder does have a code on it that signifies when the CVT fluid needs done, but I can't recall offhand what number that is.

Even if it isn't, I would have no problems using it, a lot of the guys with modified turbo Civics with the CVT swear by this stuff over the Honda fluid.
When you’re under warranty, I don’t want to give them any route to deny it

I would have stayed with OEM Honda CVT fluid..
The only non- Honda fluids I use in my Hondas are Mobil1 0w20 EP oil and Rain-X washer fluid.
IMHO, the MM in most manufacturers vehicles are to minimize costs for owners, not to maximize vehicle life. I don't believe in running any lubricant to the maximum usage.
My Hondas get OCI's never over 5k, CVT every 30k, brake fluid Flush every 4 years, a bit more aggressive than Honda schedules but I'm somewhat picky and old-school. Honda is somewhat persnickity about using their fluids when warranty is involved and pretty specific in motor oil. I use Honda filters as well, with a 7yr 100,000 mile Hondacare I think we'll probably have the cars for a while. I've driven Hondas for about 40 years, always probably over-maintained them, but have driven several 100,000 plus without any major issues and none has ever left me sitting.

I plan on having the other fluids besides oil done at the dealer. The oil will be undecided as of now but the filter will be OEM for sure.

I would go for the Mobil 1 ESP X2 0W-20. It's a good oil that meets many stringent specs... VW 508/509, Dexos D, Porsche C20, MB229.71, etc. And it's not outlandishly priced or anything. Also available at every auto parts store, at least where I am. If Honda just gives 0W-20 as a spec, you really aren't limited to any specific oil. You could even go for HPL or Amsoil 0W-20 and not risk voiding warranty.

Honda specs API 0w20 in their owners manual

In that case the ESP X2 would be my choice. Correct viscosity, API SP rated, along with ACEA C5, VW 508/509, Porsche C20, Dexos D, MB229.71. A lot of good approvals, reasonably priced, and easily available. At this point every auto parts store I have walked into has it, as well as Walmart. Pricing is around the same as the other synthetic oils.

Why use an emissions protection oil? What benefit would that give me on a new motor?

I have a 2012 Civic 1.8L 126k miles. From day one she has received either Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil-1 0W-20 until 75k miles when I switched to high mileage oil. Fram Ultra XG7317 until they changed it and now a Fram Synthetic Endurance FE7317 (which is massive overkill as far as oil filters go, but worth the piece of mind for $13). OCI's every 5k-7.5k miles. ATF drain and fill every 30k with Honda DW-1 (I am uncertain about their CVTs, but for a standard transmission I have heard from multiple people I trust with cars to only use Honda branded ATF fluid).

She doesn't burn a drop of oil and runs the same as the day I got her. Honda knows how to make a small engine better than anyone else, and as long as you keep fresh fluid in it when you should there should never be a problem.

It's not necessarily about the emissions protection part of the oil, although that is helpful, just means that it's lower sulfated ash. Won't poison the catalytic converter as quickly if it burns a little oil. That is not the reason I recommended it. The manufacturer certifications that this oil meets are very stringent. VW 508/509, Porsche C20, and MB229.71 are not easy specs to meet, nor are they specs you see on any cheap or subpar oils. Mobil calls all of the low-SAPS oils that meet German specs ESP. What's important is that those specs, especially all 3 together, mean that the oil has been tested by VW, Porsche, and Mercedes, and it meets their requirements for an oil to be run in their engines that require a 0w-20. The Porsche spec especially is not going to be found in a cheap oil or anything but the best of the best. Same goes for the Mercedes spec. Let's put it this way, if you bought a new $100,000 Porsche that requires 0w-20 oil, the manual would say to only use an oil that meets Porsche C20. Using another oil could void your warranty. Seeing that spec on an oil is an indicator of quality. This oil is about the only commonly available 0w-20 that meets European specs. And it's available everywhere, at a reasonable price. The more specs an oil is approved for, that is an indicator of a quality oil.

The “sulfated ash” won’t poison the catalyst, in fact there isn’t any sulfated ash in the oil. It’s the phosphorus that poisons the catalyst, if it gets there in the first place. Unless this engine is burning prodigious amounts of oil it’s not an issue.

I have used this oil in my M260 engine. Very good oil indeed however It's a bit overkill to use it for the OP's purposes solely due to pricing! Maybe once they make the 5 QT jugs, the price of the green juice will be more reasonable!

Castrol Edge EP 0W-20 also carries the 229.71 and now is on sale at AAP for $23!

Just learned a new tip for Honda owners with CVTs. Apparently the transmission vent gets clogged with debris and pressure will push the fill plug out.

Specific to Civic, there’s a ton of road debris that lands in that area. I saw a bunch of oil residue on our 2016 trans area last night and surprise surprise the fill plug had come out and was sitting on top of the trans.

Hoping it didn’t ingest anything harmful into the trans. There was some small debris stuck to the oil in the top of the fill hole bore that I cleaned out. It’s almost due for service anyhow so I’ll be doing that this weekend.

The plug was extremely loose upon re installation. I pulled the fluid level plug to check and it wasn’t low. I check the oil in that car every couple weeks and I didn’t notice that last time so hopefully it’s not been open for too long.

May look into an expandable plug for it or just replace the factory plug at every service. I don’t recall it being loose when I serviced it last. Cleaned the vent out for good measure but it didn’t seem clogged.
