2024 Civic w/NA 2.0 - Honda recommends 0w-20 - Suggestions and thoughts?

Highly doubt it based on generic filters used at drive through oil change shops.

Give them a call about using a different oil filter?

Choose whatever makes you comfortable. Remember Honda doesn't make oil filters. But if you're looking for the best, Honda OE is not it.
Im going to email the service center where I bought it and see what they say.

Just learned a new tip for Honda owners with CVTs. Apparently the transmission vent gets clogged with debris and pressure will push the fill plug out.

Specific to Civic, there’s a ton of road debris that lands in that area. I saw a bunch of oil residue on our 2016 trans area last night and surprise surprise the fill plug had come out and was sitting on top of the trans.

Hoping it didn’t ingest anything harmful into the trans. There was some small debris stuck to the oil in the top of the fill hole bore that I cleaned out. It’s almost due for service anyhow so I’ll be doing that this weekend.

The plug was extremely loose upon re installation. I pulled the fluid level plug to check and it wasn’t low. I check the oil in that car every couple weeks and I didn’t notice that last time so hopefully it’s not been open for too long.

May look into an expandable plug for it or just replace the factory plug at every service. I don’t recall it being loose when I serviced it last. Cleaned the vent out for good measure but it didn’t seem clogged.

If changing the CVT fluid is required every 30k instead of 50k like Honda recommends, why aren't you also increasing the viscosity to 5W30?

The Honda filter is changed every other OCI. It has lower efficiency, so it can have higher capacity.

IIRC the efficiency is around 85%, not 60%.
Per Motorking and the old amsoil test its mid 60% for an A02, based on Toyota filter construction and similarity to A01 i would expect the much vaunted A01 to be lower than the A02.

Yes, I had mistaken 65% for the Toyota filter, but it looks like that was even worse.

I wonder if it due to the popularity of Toyota in the developing world.

If the cars are operated in extreme conditions with lots of dust, low quality gas and oil you would probably want a bit lower efficiency so the filter does't go into bypass.

OEM filter ( there’s too many of them in use in the world to be bad ) and M1 extended performance
I don’t subscribe to that same theory. Right now there are a lot of Champion Labs filters being used by do it yourselfers and they aren’t exactly confidence inspiring filters of late 🫣

Is champion labs an OEM filter manufacturer? I still think an OEM filter is safe, and IMO in this case, being VERY common amongst a lot of Honda motors, I think its good.

What is your reccomendation for the 2.0 Honda? I think you have one as well? Looks like you're running that Vietnamese filter, the Motomaster?

When Champion made the Mobil1 filters, I used them, now they are made by Mann-Hummel, Mobil advised they are currently made by Purolator. I've switched to the Honda 15400-PLM-A02, essentially a Fram in a blue can, if Honda warranties their engines with this filter, I'm good with that. My UOA's show very low particle count, so I've gotten off the filter Merry-Go-Round with constantly changing sourcing.

Champion Labs does make some of the OEM filters, such as the AC Delco for example.

I am currently running the Motomaster, which I thought was a good filter when I first installed it but it turns out it too might suffer from the leaky bypass valve 🫤 I just bought a Carquest Premium for the upcoming oil change and I’m going to continue using that filter on both of my cars as long as it continues to be a well built filter.

I threw a Puralator ONE after dumping the factory fill (early, don't tell anyone... and 0w20, don't tell anyone) in the FL5. After 6k miles it wasn't leaking or showing any signs of distress 🤷‍♂️ take it with a grain of salt. Amsoil went on after that and will be on for 2 changes maybe 3.

ITs kinda crazy that we live in a world where something can literally go from being the best we've ever seen to poor within a short time frame. I will never understand why companies do that. I guess cost saving measures, people not doing their QC jobs correctly, something...

It’s really annoying how much has changed in the oil filter industry and it’s a good reason to spend a lot of time on this site to find out the latest news 😃
