The main problem with these engines is not oil related IMO but rather coolant leak related. Lots of Toyota V6 tend to spring leaks via the head gasket or water pump. There is some anecdotal evidence by Toyota mechanics that it could be related to the super long life pink Toyota coolant. This is what I would focus on if you want a 200k-300k engine.

That's [censored]. The pink coolant gets blamed for problems in the 2az-fe too but it's casting issues and bum waterpumps from aisin.

You could be right.. No hard evidence which is why I said anecdotal. But considering that several Toyota mechanics are talking about it and it is happening across several different Toyotas engines/generations, I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility either. Regardless, Toyotas have a lot of premature coolant leaks. My Toyota gave out at 140,000 due to a head gasket coolant leak and I'm not unique.

Aside from the water pump leaks (and some occasional headgasket issues), you can pretty much count on needing to re-seal the timing cover at some point. On the 2gr-Fe, you'll need to drop the engine/tranny out together in order to get enough room to remove the timing cover. It is pretty much impossible to r/r the timing cover with the engine in the vehicle.

Yes. And 10,000 miles OCIs. I have a 2012 Highlander with the same engine. I've done 10K oil changes as recommended using Toyota 0W20. I haven't done an analysis, but I've seen others and feel pretty comfortable with 10K. I'm about to start doing my own oil changes (dealer did the first few for free) and *may* shorten it down to 7500 miles. I haven't decided. No *reason* to do so, but I might just for the heck of it since that's the OCI I've always used for my other vehicles that run synthetic.

There is no way you can feel when your engine needs an oil change.

I disagree.

Use 5W-30 - 5k OCI on conventional or 10k OCI on synthetic should be easy. That engine is not hard on oil and holds quite a bit - 6.5 quarts.

Yeah I was surprised it holds as much as my truck.

I am really impressed that people can tell when to change their oil based upon a 'butt dyno rough feeling'. Been driving a long time and have never been able to pull that off.

My car burns oil at a rate of 1 quart approximately around 4000 miles. When its about to be a quart low, I can tell because my idle is rougher and the car just doesn't drive as smooth.
