Bought a 2009 Camry - Oil Recommendations?

I have read over threads about some of the Toyota Camry years with oil consumption issues.

I scored a 2009 Camry base model with 12,800 miles!

I am asking for oil recommendations that might help reduce development of oil burning.
Any thoughts? Any specific weight/brand I should consider? Does it matter?

Car was driven very little over 15 years but had oil changed almost every year at the dealer.

I second the valvoline RP 5w-30 just to keep the rings clean even with yearly changes. But only 12,800 miles? got a story as to how it was driven that little. Was it some old lady that only drove to the grocery store a block away from her home?

2009 Camry is 2az-fe. I’ve owned two 2009 iterations of that engine and both were oil burners. So was the 2012 version. A 2009 is a good bet to eventually become one, but at an amazing 13k miles it’s possible the rings and drain holes are already starting to gum up just from lack of movement.

If this were mine I would run Valvoline Restore & Protect 5w-30 and would check the oil level with every tank of gas. The minute you see it starting to drop do a Berryman’s piston soak.

Thanks all for the advice.

Specifically for that engine and its issues, is the 5W-30 a better choice from now on?

From the place where the "little old lady" lived and the stores in the town I suspect the engine was fully warmed up on her trips.

Are the additives in the Restore & Protect significantly better than Mobil 1 0W-30?

HPL products total overkill?

I doubt that this vehicle has any oil burning with that low mileage and frequent oil changes. I would commit to 5000 mile oil change intervals with any high quality synthetic, in the weight recommended by Toyota.

Totally agree ;)

If it was me, I'd just do 5k on a decent full synth. If it decides to burn oil, not much else could have been done--many of these were oil burners due to rings sticking. 10k on older oils didn't help (nor did the piston design). But if this got a yearly change I have to doubt any buildup has occurred (my pure guess).

If this is bound to start burning at 150k, how long will it take for you to get there? It's a 15 year old car--do you have plans to drive for another 15 years? many do not have a burning desire to own a car "forever".

I would personally run two 3K OCIs initially with the cheapest 5W30 Synthetic High Mileage or Synthetic High Mileage Blend paired with a cheap Super Tech Oil Filter. Then transition over to 5K OCIs with a quality 5W30 High Mileage Full Synthetic paired with a Fram Tough Guard or Carquest Premium. Run the filter 2 OCIs then from here on out of ownership. Also, run 2 bottles of Chevron Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner through the gas tank per instructions on bottle. Advance Auto often has buy one get one free of the Chevron Techron Complete Fuel System. Good luck...
