According to our lawmakers [who are aggressively pursuing getting gas prices down] the oil companies make nine cents a gallon profit.
The Gov't makes fifty cents per gallon 'profit'.
Who is the price gouger?
Who then, has the immediate power to attenuate the prices?
BTW, I was shocked to hear that U.S. drivers buy $1,100,000,000.00 of gas EVERY DAY!
Count the zeros - it's correct.

I saw that on TV the other day. They explained that the feds make .18cents a gallon plus the state tax. In NY, I know the state tax is .50 so if you live in NY its .68cents a gallon. It wouldn't be so bad if the money was actually going to upkeep the roads but we all know it doesn't.

ExxonMobil makes about 8 cents on the dollar profit. Overall average for all businesses is approx 7 cents per dollar. Through the 90s, Exxon made about 6 cents per dollar profit.

60% of the price of a gallon of gasoline is crude oil; 20% is taxes at every level; 20% is refining, transportation, marketing, etc.

Pols always blame others for their own failures. That's their job: professional finger-pointers. The inflated dollar, a lack of refinery capacity, and a major war in the middle of the oil fields are the main reasons for the high price of gas.

Rant on:

Well, there is more to it then that. First, there is the markup from the refiner to the distributor, then the markup from there to the wholesaler, then, finally to the retail outlet. The overall markup is in the neighborhood of $.25/gallon. I won't go into the interrelationship between all of these links, think companies owned by companies, owned by etc...

Now the crude. You really don't have any way to tell what it cost the refinery. Any crude not bought on the spot market only costs the pumping and distribution costs, some less then $20, some more, but none at the current spot market price. Heck, Shell already knows that they can produce a nice light crude from oil shale for around $40/bbl.

I don't begrudge the oil companies a profit. BUT... We have a problem. Oil has become a necessity, a utility, like electricity. OTOH, I can't imagine how it could be regulated. What we need is a national energy policy where the producers and the government, as the peoples representative, work together to maximize the product and minumize the use. Unfortunately, our country is so polarized that it is not possible for anything like that to happen. We as a nation are willing to die from cold and starvation, rather then get together and deal with the issues.

I hope I never have to use my survivorist skills, but I do know how, and am prepaired to do so if necessary.

Rant off:

I don't like paying the high gas prices but I do know how a business operates. I think the oil companies are an easy scapegoat, especially the government. The price of oil and gas is mostly set in the commodities markets. Everyone thinks it costs them 10 cents to produce a gallon of gas. All the infrastructure it takes to get that gallon of gas in your tank is not cheap.
