Would you buy a Fram if it had metal endcaps?

I will be sure to cut open the next filter from that engine! Its a fram ultra tho

FRAM Ultra is a bullet proof filter IMO, so it will look good when cut open.

Metal or fiber end cap is not too importance for low end filter that most drivers will use for 6-7k miles or less. Less filter media and cost more than other low end filters is the problem.

I've used many Fram orange cans over the years and I've used several Frams in recent years, including three orange cans.
Nothing wrong with Fram filters if you can pick them up cheaply enough.
Probably not worth a premium over a Purolator, but an okay filter.
I'm currently stocked up on Purolator/Bosch oil filters, but I'd buy a Fram if the price were right.

I remember not too long ago when I pulled off a FRAM OCOD (as some here describe it) during an OCI, and the thing just rattled and everything inside just fell apart and was loose.

Question: can this be blamed on the "card board" endcaps? Just curious.

BTW, now I usually use Motorcrafts, Purolators, and lately with my dozen purchase of NAPA Pro Selects.

To answer the original question (assuming it refers to the orange can):

Not even if it had unobtainium end caps.

If for some reason it became necessary for me to use an Ultra, I would do so, but would switch back to Motorcraft ASAP.

The Ultra is a much better filter than the Motorcraft. Ultra filter (it does have metal end caps) is in a whole different league than the rest of the FRAMs.

At $8.97 at WalMart....its one of the best buys out there in the the high tier filter market.

I will use it for two 7,500 OCI's....with M-1 0w20.

Same here! I got my Fram Ultras for 5.75. Im no Fram fan but the ultra is a good filter.

Where did you find 'Ultras' for $5.75? I would definately be interested in purchasing some at that price.

I buy Purolators for two reasons, the most important of which I list second:

1) They are a good product at a good value.

2) Purolator is a local company, builds all of its oil filters in the United States (most in the city in which I live), and designs its oil filters right here...the white collar jobs. I'm friends with one of the filter engineers at Purolator, so I have a personal connection with the company. See what I'm using right now in my signature.

I'd buy a Fram if both of the statements above were true about it.

A most refreshing reply! And no irrational vitriol included... what a concept?

PS: I want to know where the $5.75 Ultras are too! Best deal I found was on eBay for $6.99/per if you bought four... which I did. Was a little nervous that they might be knockoffs or something, but they weren't.

If by "much better" you mean "much more expensive", then I would agree.

Jim Allen (or was it dNewton3?) posted a wonderfully erudite and detailed thesis in which it was stated that unless the filter in question demonstrated a measurable improvement in wear, then its extra "betterness", if you will, was not relevant. I think the factory-recommended Motorcraft filter is of sufficiently high quality (for my purposes) that there isn't anything that could, in practical terms, be better.

IMHO. YMMV. Professional driver. Closed Course. Do not attempt. Use only as directed. Etc.

It was Newton.

I can't discount his argument but my gut tells me there is more to it. Until I can find an equally convincing argument to counter it with, it stands as a pretty good theory, if not fact.

There is more to a filter than efficiency. Where the Ultra, and the other premium syn filters, are better than the MC, or similar filters, is the vastly increased capacity. The Ultra for my 5.4L has twice the capacity of the MC FL820S so for longer runs, it would prove to be a better filter. That capacity would also be a plus in the filter's ability to avoid bypass. Whether these two features, added to the syn's significant efficiency advantage, is worth the price premium needs to evaluated on an individual basis. For short, or relatively short, OCIs the premium filters probably don't add up.

Not so sure that is a true statement anymore. I think some of the Purolator air, fuel and motorcycle oil filters are not manufactured in the USA.

Ok,overall,is the extra money to buy an Ultra that much better then a MC "S" filter?

Guess it depends on how much money you want to spend on an oil filter. But comparing design and performance specs, the Ultra is the better filter. If you can get them for a good price and justify the added cost, then go for the Ultra.

Also, if you ever plan on doing extended OCIs, or use the filter for 2 OCIs, then the Ultra would be ideal.

I don't think I could bring myself to using an oil filter twice, knowing how they are cheap insurance.
