When you do the same stuff day in and day out and you work for the public you often need motivation other than $$$ to keep you going.

The thrill after 45 years leaves your old and tired bones..Before the Inflation hit I would buy a new machine tool now and then to keep me motivated but now they cost as much as a new economy car.

Plus the older you get the more you realize you can't keep doing that as there will be no payout. Money seems to disappear with age too.

Boredom sets in quickly and thoughts of retirement sinks in even if you can't afford it...

What do you do to keep motivated...?

Bills LOL

I'm very young by comparison, barely 12 years into my career.

Edit: oh you asked what we do to keep motivated. Random hobbies, I didn't realize how expensive hand tools are for woodworking lol.

Thus far I like to bbq on my days off. I have two to three local small businesses that are interested in selling my homemade bourbon bbq sauce. I've been job hunting for a while, and they either want some weird combination of skills ie (looking for a tech writer/ journalist with a medical background... Who has that?) Or lowballing. I applied for a parts customer service job, have three years of dealership experience, sales and lot manager plus helped the guys I interviewed with mop up a spill in the showroom floor only to get lowballed.

Good luck in your endeavors 👍

I am fully retired now. Last night I actually told my wife I was bored.

Looking forward to warmer weather where I can work outside. I like having projects, but nothing on the immediate radar.
Just got in from late winter cleaning the chicken coop and yard. That burned off some latent energy. Feel better now.

Actually thought about getting a part time job not for money just something to do during down time, but in the long run don't really want to do that.

My last few years in business really got a bit boring. Same old stuff every day. Almost like groundhog day.

At any rate looking forward to spring and asking myself what can I throw myself into long term.

Why do you say you can't afford to retire, is that your assessment, or a financial advisors assessment? If it is your personal opinion, seek financial services help and try to understand your horizon to retirement. That might give you motivation.

I have a great friend who was a deacon at the local church tell me "no one is ever laying on their death bed wishing they worked more"

Just my $0.02

The retirement line is if the person reading it can't retire....
Me? If I had a billion $ in the bank I still would sweat the details.....just a disease. Worry to worry for no reason.

My wife is a chronic worrier. She worries enough for me and our boys. I have said to her forever, if you can't change it don't worry about it. If you can change it, stop worrying and change it. I guess I'm different, but I try very hard not to worry at all.

Just my $0.02
