Work Motivation In Your Older Age

That I hopefully only have 6.5 years left to reach 62 so I can retire. Paying the bills, spending time with family when I can and looking at my 401k keeps me somewhat motivated toward that goal.

I work overnights for the last 18 years currently. Going to bed at 2pm and getting up at 9pm Sunday>Thursday seriously DE-motivates many things. I am a volunteer in local FD/EMS so that is always something to do and is good to help others and have friends.

After having a job from the age of 10 (newspaper delivery agent) and a bus boy job at a nice restaurant at 14, I don't have any guilty feeling about doing as little as possible for the last 5 years. I have hobbies like, motorcycles, watches, bowling, my audio systems (4) going and exercised. Having a nice companion like my Lady Friend makes a world of difference. Lately I have been successful in sleeping later in the morning, I feel better as a result. I trade stocks to keep my mind sharp. Best part is I am successful 75% of the time. Plus I get the motivation of the blokes around here. :D

I retired at 56 and we're fortunate that I didn't need to find anything that paid like I was getting before. I work 2 days a week doing very physical work, and I really enjoy the change from a desk job. Far easier to keep myself in shape, and far less stress. The pay is not great at all, but I don't need the money - it's nice to feel needed and appreciated and have something to look forward to each week.

Well I ain’t old but I know the motivation part. Not to mention the aches and pains from working and standing on concrete and bending and twisting all the time. I’ve been a mechanic for 6 years now I’ve said I’m ready to retire every year since I started lol. Working for the public sucks especially open to close 5 days a week. I lack motivation to do anything after work or on weekends unless it’s a really relaxed week at work.

To fill my boredom in my free time I’m trying to find a wonderful lady to meet and do things with but it is so hard in today’s time. There are no ladies in my field at all it seems and I don’t know where to meet them really not had any luck at bars and girl at church I’m not sure if she will be interested. I’m so interested in a relationship I just can’t find one. Other than trying to find me a girl I occupy my time with movies and TV shows and go antiquing and thrifting for DVDs and old tools and signs and stuff. I’m also trying to get out of my parent’s house but I simply can’t afford it without a second income. I’d like to buy a house with a big garage. People ask me to work on stuff outside of work but most of the time I don’t want too. I’ll be 23 this year so still plenty of life to live and also too many years until retirement lol.

There is a positive in all of this. You only have 42 years left...

And good things come to those who wait. Death is one of those...😆

You should ask the girl at church out for lunch after church. You never know...........

Wish I knew--I sure haven't. Middle age is beating me up. But so is winter, it's dragging out--I need to get outside again. [But I know in 4 or 5 months I'll be whining about how it's too hot and sunny outside :ROFLMAO: ]

I haven't done a good job of getting out of the house. Kids are only just getting to self reliant stage, you know, college. But then that brings the stress of paying for college. While paying for the house. While paying/saving for retirement. I lost all friends during child rearing (and watching the dog that the wife wanted); now I have no life outside of work.

Some days motivation is beyond me--fixating on how nice it'll be in 19 years when I retire... somehow isn't quite the light at the end of the tunnel I could use.

I admire your candor and work ethic. Keep punching kid!

Just an observation. You do seem to spend lots of money on eating out, DVD's, and other non-necessities. Or at least you mention those things often. You might be able to save some serious money towards a house, if you modified your spending and saving.

After years as a Mechanic when I was your age, and seeing the culture I would be dealing with if I stayed, I became determined to save every penny I could, went back to school in the evenings and eventually earned an MBA. I quit working as a Mechanic, and sunk every dime into starting my own business. There were no guarantees, but eventually that risk and hard work paid off.

Leaving your current career for something else may not be the right choice for you. Only you can decide that.

Ultimately it's none of my business what you do, but if you're not happy with the way things are going, I'd suggest making some changes. You're still young, and can do so.

Good luck.

@AutoMechanic please take @02SE advice to heart. Ay your age, you could attend your local Community College 2-4 nights a week, after work. I guarantee you will meet some great people (and ladies) there. I tell people, "Invest in yourself!"

I went back to school for good at 33, after getting sober. Things worked out, including with my wonderful lady.
Good luck.

You are young, right between my son and daughter you have many opportunities. School is a big one even if just one class at a time. It gets you back in the learning game. School is not for everyone, I understand. There are many civil service exams and opportunities everywhere. I don't know the income level or opportunities for advancement or possibilities for your own shop. That may come with other stress things.

At 23 military may be an option also if interested, they will pay for school still also. Trade schools for plumbing, electrical, HVAC, welding all have options for good income.

My dad worked for local power company, at 34 after getting out from active duty Army, he started there training auto mechanics. They sent him to the corporate schools because at the time all the emissions and computer stuff was new and someone had to train mechanics to fix their large fleet correctly, not parts cannon. He and his boss started their own company doing the same thing in the evenings at "local" gas stations (within a 1 hour drive) through gas station retailers group. The site that hosted it got to send 2 mechanics free. His policy was he needed 10 minimum, 20 max and no it wasn't cheap. He was busy a long time. That also branched into ASE tests, helping write them and train for them.

Look at the hobbies that you enjoy maybe opportunities in that. If not look at the investment in the hobbies and if you invested that money into the S&P 500, Nasdaq or other. What are the potential returns? Yes markets go up and down, no guarantees. My kids had an opportunity to invest $10k in November '21. They put it in Schwab S&P 500 index fund (SWPPX). As of December 31, '24 that grew to $15, 844.

Look at the money spent on dining out, the hobbies, vices (smoke/drink). Don't stop living and doing what gives you some happiness. Do look about health and wealth. I'm 55, I bring my lunch to work in an insulated bag everyday. Many I work with spend almost $15/day for food at work. $30 for the week for me is nice sandwich, fruit, yogurt, oatmeal snack bar. That's $180/month more in my pocket than those I sit with daily. One younger about 27yo asked some questions. He started investing more in his 401K and brings his lunch now also.

If you are getting body aches and pains you need to find a better paying job without the wear on your body.
I think medical robotics you would be very good at. I know someone get a $20K sign on bonus for this field very recently. Base pay plus OT you can buy a home. Very easy job on your body.

Get on a strict budget and stop spending money due to boredom, going to gas station for junk food / beer, etc..

The right woman is out there you have to keep looking, avoid bars….

You seriously need to get your finances in order and budget for your future.
