And that is what my friend and I always thought. The locals though say it doesn't work and they would know better than I would. They say a Grizzly can shrug a regular .44 off and keep going/coming even when hit in the head.
I for one would not want to find out! I would rather be over armed than under armed and I will always listen to the advice of those who know better than I do.
FWIW, my father also has told me that a .357 Magnum at close range, dead to the center skull, will stop a Grizzly.
This probably came about because he preferred to shoot .357Mag S&W revolver over .44 Mag.. probably less recoil, and more controllable, though I'd imagine both kick like a wild mule. 6.25" barrel? I forget.
He was also in the Marines, and also said that the Smith and Wesson was easy to carry when riding horseback, which is what he told me he carried in the unfortunate event he encountered a bear. He also said they usually leave you alone, unless provoked or rabid.
