Woman killed by bullet fired to stop Grizzly Bear

What gun did they have? In big bear country I'd have a Marlin .45-70 guide gun loaded with stout hard cast in the house.

If you can't carry a handgun, an AR10 should do the trick.

And that is what my friend and I always thought. The locals though say it doesn't work and they would know better than I would. They say a Grizzly can shrug a regular .44 off and keep going/coming even when hit in the head.

I for one would not want to find out! I would rather be over armed than under armed and I will always listen to the advice of those who know better than I do.

FWIW, my father also has told me that a .357 Magnum at close range, dead to the center skull, will stop a Grizzly.

This probably came about because he preferred to shoot .357Mag S&W revolver over .44 Mag.. probably less recoil, and more controllable, though I'd imagine both kick like a wild mule. 6.25" barrel? I forget.

He was also in the Marines, and also said that the Smith and Wesson was easy to carry when riding horseback, which is what he told me he carried in the unfortunate event he encountered a bear. He also said they usually leave you alone, unless provoked or rabid.

One of these

If I recall correctly.

I don't know much about guns, but.. seems a lot of people prefer larger.

I have heard of .454 Casull but I don't know anything about firearms.

Amazing how tough Canada is on Handguns. I cant imagine United States ever slipping into laws like that, although a few Northern states have such laws now. Americans are more determined then ever not to give a inch on gun laws and carry. I think a .357 magnum is underrated. It takes a backseat to the big bores, much like a 9mm does to the .45 ACP. I ve dropped Whitetails with a .357 through the neck, although a deer is not a Grizzly. I would feel confident with a 6" .357 magnum on my hip. I know I could hit more than with a .44. .44 magnums aren't the easiest gun to control and I can tell you after about 4 rounds, your frazzled. Its the kick. So I am not sure how you would ever really get good with it.

As a restricted rifle, the AR-10 has the same restrictions as a handgun, including storage and where it can be used. Never mind that a hypothetical hunting .308 in semi-automatic is perfectly unrestricted....

I won't get political, but don't let it happen down there. It's a lot harder to undo it than you can imagine, even when a pro-gun government comes in.

In any case, if it were me, I already stated my suggestions. A nice lever action carbine of sufficient caliber would make perfect sense. A slug gun would be no slouch, either!

I think a Freedom Arms revolver in .454 Casull would be a lovely firearm to experience, but has no real practicality.

Is that the one that does Casull, Colt, and .410 ?

I handled one of them one day, and it's a less likely than practical beast in Oz than up there.

Nope, just checked, that's the freedom arms one...does nothing even OK according to the owner.

A guide gun takedown would be legal here, and there, and work.

A guide gun would be just fine. I've always wanted to try a Freedom Arms .454 Casull. I don't, however, want to carry one, do a bunch of target practice with one, or pay for one.
