I got an 8 year old used car and the windshield is scratched from dirty wiper blades. Stoplights like starbursts and any amount of Invisible Glass won't help. Any idea what this costs? If I'm gonna do it, it would be before I get the windows tinted, so they can put a darker sun visor strip on it.

Thanks!

Have you checked to see if your insurance offers free glass replacement? Mine does, no deductible and no raised rates.

Yes they do. But I just bought the car and don't want to make a claim right away. My insurance costs enough already.

Most don't raise rates for windsheild claims. I'm not sure but someone once told me it was a law or something that insurance companies had to do it so people didn't try to chase down trucks and other vehicles when they threw a stone and cracked the windsheild. Might want to call your agent and just ask what their policy is. Otherwise depending on the shape of the windsheild they are usually 300-400 bucks last time I had one replaced.

It's highly dependent on how popular the car is, how much the windshield curves, if there are any special things like antennas in the glass, etc. I would just call your local auto glass specialist and ask.

I purchased a used car years ago with about 130K miles and the windshield was badly pitted. I told my insurance company that it was bad enough to interfere with my vision at night and they paid for replacement with no deductible and no rate increase.

Safelite auto glass did the work and billed the insurance directly.

No hassles and clear vision. Bummer was that I was on an interstate behind a dump truck a few months later and caught a stone about 1/4 inch from the top edge of the windshield. The crack came right down in front of the driver's position. Another new windshield, same deal.

Have a pro do it.
Many services will come to where the car is - you don't even have to drop it off.

And one more thing - have a pro do it. Really.

I had my windshield replaced recently. They came to my home at 8am, I was the first on the books for the his day. I opened the garage door part way so he could duck in and get started. He really liked that it was already heated (heated garage)since it was about 30F outside. He said the cold sometimes makes it harder to break the seal and remove it.
Just under $200 and done. Next morning on my way to work I got a rock that hit hard. I don't know how it didn't break.

What kind of car is it? My brother just replaced the windshield on his 01 Beetle. The Beetle's is huge! I did some digging. It looks like only one company in the world makes the Beetle windshield, Saint-Gobain Sekurit. He called around and found a place in his town. They charged him $235.00 OTD. I couldn't believe how cheap it was. I believe Safelite was around $300.00. Just get multiple quotes!

Try Safelite Auto Glass if they are in your area. I had good luck with them so far. I am not pushing this company, it's just they do a lot of glass in SoCal and they are about as cheap as anyone else, and they are fast and do not leave a mess.

+1 for Safelite. My wife's Nitro got a rock hit a few months after we bought it. We did claim it through Progressive, which cost us $100 I think. Even though it doesn't raise your rates, it DOES get marked as a claim against your insurance. If you get too many claims, don't be suprised if they drop you.

I had the windshield replaced on my '97 Crown Vic because the old one was leaking at the top.

It turned out that the old one (which was not the OE windshield) wasn't installed properly. The sealer didn't stick to the windshield and the installer never primed the bare metal where they cut out the old sealer, causing it to rust. The installer who did the job for me did it right and told me that there are a lot of fly-by-night windshield installers out there who don't do it correctly.

I bought mine out of pocket when a rock hit the old one. It was $160 installed at the glass company. I got a PPG windshield with a tint strip at the top. The install was perfect, no leaks or fit/finish issues.

I would suggest going with OEM quality glass such as PPG, Carlite, etc.
