My wife's cousin pulled out of his driveway then 1/2 mile down the road 2 morons smoking pot pulled out in front of him .
He had no jacket on because that would cover his cool tats , no helmet on because then he wouldn't be able to show off his new dew rag .
Broke his wrist pretty bad , ribs messed up and lots of road rash .
If you have any family that likes you at all it's absolutely stupid to ride without proper protective gear .

co-worker broke his pelvis riding a month back. It sucks. He almost got paralyzed from the waist down. It was the car driver's fault.

Would a helmet have helped? Goodness no.

When I rode, it was all the gear, all the time.

These people are close to us and this stuff happens to those within our circles if not ourselves.

Putting my bike up for sale after years of riding and three accidents, last of which almost took me out (with helmet and gear on). Hope your wife's cousin 1. recovers quickly and completely, and 2. learns something from the experience.

That's a little mean. Noone deserves to be hurt in a wreck.

One of my millennial coworkers has a magnetic mount on his H-D for his phone...so he can catch up on social media while on his way home...which happens to be an interstate route...at midnight when our shift is done.

"It's not if you crash, but when" and "ignorant [censored]" will be in his eulogy.

I do wear MOTSGMOTT (most of the safety gear most of the time), but I still believe that 90% of staying safe is the driver, no matter who is "at fault." I have had some close calls that were not really my fault, but I could have avoided if I was a) even more attentive and b) traveling a little bit more slowly, or at a different time of the day, etc. Yes, the gear can help in the worst case scenario, but it is far, far better to avoid getting into that scenario in the first place.

Recently I've had some close calls too. Everyone who has a smartphone is on it, either Facebooking or texting, etc. I'm almost ready to sell my bikes after the last month of dealing with stupid people on the road.

I'm 46 and know all to well that I am not capable of owning a motorcycle or a quad or a dirt bike. I just can't keep the speed down. So I stay away. I'm also a cop and see just how many motorcycle riders do ZERO wrong and end up dead or with bones sticking out of their legs. I love the MC's and truly dream of a Harley Electra Glide but the danger is just too much. I'm bad enough on a mountain bike.

Keeping the gene pool cleansed. No helmet,no leathers and spin the wheel of probabilities. What's that old high school drivers ed film? You are right. Dead Right!

Hope's for a speedy recovery.

From career as a firefighter I'm solidly prohelment and proper leather gear. Seeing so many knees and elbows ground to the bone has proven to me the importance of gear. Not having to shovel up brains is the benefit of wearing a helmet.

A buddy of mine is an actual grave digger. The mortuary calls him when they need a hole for a casket and he digs it with a John Deere back hoe.
He told me the story of a couple who were riding a motorcycle and got into an accident that killed both of them. So he had to go out and dig the hole that held both of their caskets.
As he was digging it, the couple's kids were there watching him do it. Of course, the kids were in mourning and it affected by buddy also.
As a former motorcycle owner myself, please were your protective gear.
Your accident will affect more people than yourself.

No, but when you make conscious choices to not wear gear that can protect you, you do reap the consequences of your choices.

If one does not want to wear gear, that really is no concern of mine.
I think it is stupid to do so. I see the results of it all the time having worked on the ambulance for years and now in the ER as a nurse.
I know gear can not prevent death, I see it happen all the time, and no fault of the rider, but I also see those that come in that are geared up and may have a broken bone, but skin is intact and head is fine.
I see those that come in covered in road rash with no other injuries, and correct gear would have prevented a visit to the hospital and a lot of pain.

Is that mean, or is it simply reality?
I came to this conclusion years ago when I ran as a volunteer and saw the results.
Never rode a street bike again.
When you ride on the road with many folks in cars, you're taking your chances.
Doesn't matter who's at fault, you're dead or a quad either way.
I also see a lot of riders doing stupid stuff like weaving through traffic, standing it up and splitting lanes, which is not legal here.
There is a lot of stupid driving, but there's also a lot of stupid riding.

The thing that bugs me most is from riders that say they are within the law riding without a helmet etc depending upon location. How many riders are now permanently crippled and cared for by my generous tax donations? So I expect a DNR on your license and some heavy duty life insurance for the many years of assisted diaper changes ahead of you. Neighbor lady's 21 year old son was killed a few months back. On an unfamiliar road that had a sharp turn and he went straight hitting a road sign at fairly high speed. He wasn't wearing leathers or a helmet. She was selling all his stuff at a garage sale recently. Sad all around. I quit riding a while back because people plain don't see you, especially in the cell phone age.
