This happens at every level. Some people think the number on the front of the bottle is all that matters. 10W30=10W30=10W30. I had a Brand new Ford F350 roll in yesterday with a 6.4L Bi-Turbo diesel. Customer wanted Mobil 1 5W40. We dont carry that. So he went to see what oils we had and picked out Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30. I still didnt know what was happening until I saw three jugs of Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 sitting next to it. So I went to talk to the customer and let him know he was using a oil not spec'd for a diesel. He got angry with me! I tried to reason with him that it did not meet CJ-4 spec, but he would have none of it, he wanted Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30. Eventually a manager got involved and we did the change with the Mobil 1.
I did sneak in a "Cust. Requested CF spec oil" on his work order though. I would like to see him get warranty coverage on that with that on his oil change receipts. Problem his he would probably just blame us and Ford for his troubles.

Ironicly, the various Audi/VW engines run as well or better on unspeced oils. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck, Rotella T Synthetic, Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 all are "contenders". Even current conventional SM oils have a fighting chance.

There are guys who used dino in those engines and they run fine. I think a lot of customers lied or experienced "wishfull thinking" when it came to accounting for oils changes on warranty service. The 10w30 SJ Bulky-Fill every 10k of short trips did not cut it.

A lot of people bought those $20k Passats after owning simpler cars, like my female cousin who was on her 4th VW, coming from 250k Jettas, Fox and Rabitts in Maine weather. In no way was she prepared for the 1.8T. Snapped timing belts and sludge multiple times, but she got her 250k. Her husband now subjected them to a V6 4Mo Passat Wagon. Nice car, but they haven't learned their lessons. I've moved on.

No! I refuse! ..and so does anyone else.

Then again, an Audi is no more complex than any other contemporary automobile ..like a FWD NEON ..they just cost more.

Gary, a Neon is not in the same class as any Audi made after ca 1989. Of course the Neon is much simpler. You are still not comparing apples to apples.

Well, what do YOU deem wiener:wiener comparable?? Z=cars? ..they're totally lack luster and mundane.

Maybe you need to look at car magazines to see what model and makes fall in the same categories. Maybe then you can come up with a fair pairing for the purpose of comparsion. Until then, feel free to delude yourself and to weasel out!

I'm still waiting to hear you point out just one particularly complex feature typical for an Audi, a feature which other comparable cars lack. I demand some tangible complexity! I'm know I'm going to be waiting till Never-Never Day, which means you're a gasbag!

Well, lots have matched the evolutions of VW/AUDI. They tend to be there first.

Now I still don't see much difference between a few Audi offerings and a NEON. 2.0 liters ...OHC (sometimes DOHC) 4 wheel disc brakes ...rack and pinion steering. I think some are 2 door ..and the size and length are probably comparable.

Are they as "sophisticated" as an Audi?

Can Joe K-Mart wrench work on your Audi?

Wow 11 pages. And it was just started yesterday. My local Sears told me they will not do alignments on VWs and Audis.

As to Audi Junkie's friends who just keeping coming back looking for punishment. It's like dating a high maintenance, but hot, exciting girlfriend who is good in bed. Sometimes, logic doesn't prevail.

I wasn't actually working on the car at all. I saw it coming in as I was coming back to work after a lunch break. I believe we recommended, and did, and engine flush on the engine...

You have to understand something: This particular Walmart is in a very low-income part of town. Most of our clients were low income and/or social assistance. Most cars we saw in that shop were horribly under-maintained. this car was 'just another one'.

Even people who owned 'high-end' vehicles never, ever, sprang for synthetic service on vehicles that needed it. You mentioned a synthetic oil change, and more often than not, you got a very dismissive "Are you nuts? I'm not paying that for a d*mn oil change!" Really high end vehicles that 'absolutely' needed synthetic oil we refused to service outright.
