Which is better trade-off?

Finally got my "new" engine in the CRX and decided to get serious about the oil. Did some research on filters and found two filters that will fit my engine:

Purolator Pure One L14459 - (Stock)
Case = 3.15" x 3.03"
12-15 PSI bypass w/ anti drainback

Purolator premium plus L30165
Case = 2.98" x 4.83"
25-25 PSI bypass w/ anti drainback

So in looking at these filters, the 30165 holds about 40% more oil, has larger filter area and a higher bypass pressure.
But, the stock 14459 is available in the Pure One which claims to have a 98% Multi pass efficiency vs. 96% for the 30165. Which is the better trade-off?

My thought is that if I'm changing it regularly anyway, I will probably never use the "extra" capacity of the 30165. It also helps to look at the efficiency and say the 96% filter lets 4% through, the 98% filter lets 2% through, so the 96% filter is letting twice as much crap through.

OTOH, it would be nice to know that all the oil is going through the filter (where the higher bypass comes in)

What are your thoughts?

I personally have reservations about using a PureONE filter on a hard driven car. My theory is that it will go into bypass mode too often. It doesn't use a fully synthetic media, so in order to filter out such small particles, there is that tradeoff of having less oil flow. A fully synthetic oil filter can filter small particles while still flowing well.

In this case I'd go with the Premium Plus.

What are Purolator's flow ratings on each of those filters? Larger filters typically flow better but have lower bypass pressures.

I agree with Patman if you're running a race motor with big clearances & a high flow pump. But I'm of the opinion that the 3GPM minimum ratings on most filters is adequate, so bypass doesn't happen except with cold oil or maybe when racing. My current oversize PureOne is spec'd at 7GPM. Neither of my daily drivers will move 7GPM, let alone create 9-11PSI differential pressure to open the bypass.

The best defense against bypass might be a dual-filter setup. I don't know running in bypass now and then is harmful, but when I was worried about it more multiple filters seemed the best way to avoid it completely.

Are you sure about that 7GPM rating? Because in the Purolator book it lists their filters in the 3-5GPM range, and that's for the Premium Plus. I would imagine the PureONE would then flow even less. Even the largest Premium Plus listed in the catalog doesn't flow more than 5GPM.

This compares to the K&N oil filter lineup which is listed at between 12-16GPM.

Apologies, my memory fades...

According to their book the 30001 I'm currently using flows 4GPM. The larger 40017 flows 7GPM but I couldn't find it locally. I'm planning to order Baldwin's version of the 40017 next. Have to talk to them again but I recall it flowed 9GPM.

I think the 30165 "premium plus" is rated at 4GPM while the 14459 "pure one" is rated at 3GPM. The pure one is supposed to be much more efficient, but it's also a much smaller filter and lower bypass pressure.

As far as the engine, it's a 1.6L twin cam VTEC. The stock gearing puts it at about 4,000RPM @ 70 MPH, so I'm thinking *GOOD OIL NEEDED* I'm running Mobil 1 Super Syn 10W30. (weight recommended by mfr) and a Fram filter (hangs head in disgrace...I should have done more reading on this forum, but now I know!)

Once the car warms up, idle oil pressure is about 20-25 PSI, reving anything over 2,000 it's at 75-80 PSI the cars pressure bypass valve kicks open. I don't know what kind of flow I have, but I would guess to get the pressure that high, that quick, the engine must be pretty "tight" and flow would be low?

Any other "better for the price" filters to consider?

I'm confused, why the two different numbers? at my local parts house they have the PL 14459, which is the pure one equivalent of the L 14459 premium plus.

Have used them both on my 92 Subaru SVX. The external size is the same between them, don't know about flow ratings.

Lee,

I took a look through the catalog and found a filter that holds about 40% more oil than stock, yet has the same threads and roughly the same diameter. Unfortunately the larger, higher flow, higher bypass pressure filter is not available in the higher filtration rating (Pure one = 98% multiple pass)

I also have a Scoobie that calls for the 14459 ( L or PL, your choice ), but I've been using the 24458. It has the same thread size AND the same pressure ratings AND is available in both L and PL.
