Which filter would be best?

I'm looking for a good but cost effective oil filter to do my first oil change on my new 2007 Odyssey (4000 miles). The OEM filter is a Honda Filtech. But Mobile, Bosch and Fram (XG) make what look to be decent filters too. I'm leaning towards the Bosch for cost effectivness (6 bucks vs 10 for the others). I looked at K&N, but its way expensive. Which would you choose? I will probably use Castrol GTX 5W-20 oil. I noticed the Bosch has Filtech technology, would that be equivalent to the OEM Filtech filter?

I know you didn't ask the question, but why are you changing the oil so early? Honda is pretty adamant about leaving that factory fill in there until the OLM states it should be changed.

To your question, the Bosch is okay in my book. It's paranoia on my part, but because of where that oil filter is located (under the right wheel well) I would make sure whatever you pick has a decent can on it. The K&N reigns supreme in can thickness, but I use an Amsoil EAO that is thinner because I like the filter. I worry a good rock in that wheel well could cause a puncture, but that (again) is just paranoia.

Did you look into wix filters? There is a site sponsor here (fleetfilter.com) that has a good deal on them. They are good filters as well.

BTW, I looked up the filter for you for WIX. It is p/n 51356. At fleetfilter they are charging $3.39 a filter at case price.

Out of curiosity, are you going to change your filter every OCI or every other OCI as Honda states in the maintenance guidelines? I always changed the oil filter at every OCI but I am going the distance this time with an AMsoil EAO and will do a particle count to see how effective it was.

Thanks for the information Laminar Lou. I will do my filter at each change. My oil life is at 60 %, but I just want to do the change. I just can't bring myself to leave it in for what looks like 10,000 miles. I have read alot around here and realize I will probably get ribbed, but I want to go ahead and do it. I'll do 4-5000 mile changes.

Sounds like you have an Odyssey to huh?

Bosch at Autozone or Purolator PureOne at Advance Auto Parts are the same filter. Just buy which ever is cheaper.

Most of the Honda USA Filtech Filters are now Fram.

From what I've seen, all that's different about that "factory fill" is the somewhat higher molybdenum levels. Will that really make a big difference if I don't wait until 10k ?

Bosch filters are now PureOne.

Are you positive about the Bosch being relabeled Pure 1 filters ? I would like to know where to find the information, as it would be another filter option for me .

Now personally ..me? I mean ..if it was just me ..I'd swap it out and throw caution to the wind ..no problem..but there are thousands of others who fear being cast into the great abyss for such an act.

So, in all good conscience, I have to say proceed at your own risk.

Don't mess with Honda mojo or karma.

Why not stay with the excellent OEM filter made by Filtech?

You can change your oil now or 4 K from now. My Civic's manual recommend leaving the oil in there for at least 5K, don't know about the Oddyssey.

Yeah, that filtech filter looks like a great filter. I may use it. Honda sure would be happy if I did. I was wondering if it has an aftermarket equivalent though?

Yeah, the mojo.

I feel like 4-5000 miles is enough on this stuff, and I worry about the viscosity breaking down with the long changes and 5W-20 oil. I will be changing the oil at less than 10K. More like 5K most probably. I think I'm erring on the safe side.

Charles, wow that handle is tough.... I suggest the Amsoil EaO and changing every other oil drain. It may be able to be used longer but UOA is needed to confirm. Satifies your need for low restriction, high efficiency, very little if EVER bypass, and cost savings by changing less.

Kudos to you! You figured out my handle. That EaO looks real good. If I use it for 2X OCI that comes out to ~7.50 per oil change. Tempting, very tempting.

Okay, so I've decided I'll do a change and use an Amsoil EaO filter with some Castrol GTX dino 5W-20 for the first oil change on my Odyssey. And I'm convinced that the EaO will be a good filter to leave on for 2X OCI. After oil change number two with the EaO, I may switch over to synthetic, plus a new EaO. Lavish, maybe, but it is a brand new engine and I don't mind spending a little more at first.

I've got some time to read up on the stuff.

Gary and Terry, I'm convinced that the EaO will be the best filter for me with the improved efficiency over time (and maybe the K&N filter too). I'm going to place an order today for the filter (as a present to myself

). I also ordered a Blackstone kit to do some UOA just for fun.

You must keep your vehicles fopr a half million miles or more. Otherwise, basic filtering is all you need for under 500K. Plenty of evidence of that here at BITOG.

There's also evidence that the EaO filter gets more efficient over time, hence why I chose it to go for a 2X OCI (and maybe even 3X if I do a 5K inerval).
