I have about 21 1911's - they're one of my favorites.

A single one of your 1911s would probably pay for my entire Canik collection, with spare change left over for magazines, lol.

Thank you, and @Astro14 for the good advice. I think I'll go for a $400 TISAS for my first 1911, so I can learn the platform. Then, when more money comes in, I will buy something nicer, maybe a Springfield. I also liked some of what Alfa Foxtrot is making. Unfortunately, high end 1911s are very expensive. I'm gonna be frugal with my first one.

As for the OP, @kmrinpa, for around your budget, if you search hard enough, you can buy a brand new Canik METE SF. It's a Glock 19 size handgun. It shoots really well. I would say it shoots like a bigger gun than it is, if you know what I mean. I have one, and love it. I got mine for $400 (sales tax and shipping included) two years ago.

I almost bought a Stoeger 9 when I purchased my ruger security 9.

They have a smaller version too that compares favorably to a glock 26.. (according to a review I read anyway)

from the OP...tanx! will look over recommendations over the weekend; affordability yet solid is my primary criteria; avoiding micro 9's unless they are a good buy; used is acceptable; I have had Glocks & Glock-esque types in the past...I prefer a more upright grip angle & more contoured & slimmer than Glock grip; I won't do hi-point...had issues in the past; taurus g-series & stoeger have served me in the past; lots of good choices coming out of Turkey...sometimes limited followup unless they reach the level of Canik; well...tanx again; best wishes to the person who told me good luck!

addendum...might toy with the Ruger Security 380 or used EZ 380; I have 200+ rds of leftover hollowpoints in different flavors

@1/2 price of a Hellcat & similar in aesthetics!

The ergonomics alone are a dream compared to the Glock. However it’s pretty much a Glock clone but improved.

I'm very happy with my Taurus G3C. Little over 1k rounds so far without a single failure. Now looking to add a full size G3 to the arsenal. And maybe another G3C, while they're on sale for $230ish at my local Academy.

I love the look of G4X, but it's only marginally smaller than the G3C and has less capacity, and I believe there was a recall on some of them for bump fire accidents.
G2/G3 is the way to go. Kings of reliable budget guns at the moment.

The grip on the CZ is much better than the Glock. I own one and much prefer it over the Glocks.
