I'm looking for somewhere to spend a week after Christmas with the family. Somewhere pretty and peaceful prefer mountains. I have considered the black hills but an unsure. All recommendations etc are appreciated. Looking for a relaxing getaway from the outside world sort of trip.

Anchorage is at a deep discount at Christmas. Enjoy Alaska without the tourist, and at significantly affordable prices when compared to summer in Anchorage. Late Christmas afternoon CONUS departures to Anchorage are historically very inexpensive.

A few notes
  • Rental car agencies are closed at ANC airport on Christmas day
    • Fly in Christmas night, have your hotel pick you up, take a uber the next morning to go get your rental car
    • Yes, the days are short--- so what
    • Alyeska Hotel often has great package specials for Christmas week
      • the seven seasons (IIRC) restaurant at the hotel is a tram ride up to a very special and lifetime memorable dinner
      • Alyeska also offers ski in/ ski out skiing
        • Note that although Alyeska is in a rainforest region- sometimes snow is a challenge in December
    • Seward has numerous attractions open in the winter
      • the wildlife rescue in Seward is a awesome family destination
    • Numerous tours are open during this time
      • one tour open is helicopter ride to a glacier

Rent a cabin in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Absolutely gorgeous... This was a week or 2 before Christmas when we went.

Hands down either Manitou Springs which has hot springs, the Pikes peak cognitive rail and amazing dining options all while being very affordable. The other options I could highly recommend is either Leadville for its scenic beauty hiking etc, or Buena Vista. Those are .uch lower cost for the time you're looking and something for everyone.

St. John, USVI. 60% of the island is a national park, very laid back and beautiful. Rent a home with a view of Francis Drake Passage facing the BVI. You may not want to come back home.

don't know where you're located but I would recommend Mt. Airy NC - I went with the fam last year between Christmas and new years it was awesome quiet quaint and peaceful. stayed in a Vrbo called the Bunk Street Bungalow a very charming home that was even decorated for the season. if you like Mexican highly recommend this place - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaur...ews-Chile_Rojo-Mount_Airy_North_Carolina.html

Mountains but not super busy? I like Lincoln NH, Saranac Lake NY, and the previous Anchorage AK suggestion is a great one.

I have been to the Black Hills in the summertime-the area is beautiful. In the winter time I would imagine it is a different kind of beautiful. Several small towns around the area that would have hotels and B&Bs. Another recommendation I would make is going to Yellowstone National Park in the winter time-absolutely gorgeous. Please note private cars are banned in the wintertime. So a tour would be required in either snowmobiles (they provide everything) or a snow coach.
I would however question spending a week in either area-unless it's just family time hanging out together in a nice house, cabin, etc.

Don't forget there's only about 6hrs of light at that point of the year. Sunrise at around 1000 and sunset around 1600. Not much around Anchorage I'd fly cross country to go see. Shoot I'm an hour away and I avoid that place as much as possible HAHAA
