When do you fill your gas tank?

I generally don't let the tank get much below 1/2 full. I like to be sure there's enough gas in the Camry to cover any emergencies or shortages. When on the road, if I see a good enough price for an acceptable brand of gas, I may top 'er off even if not below 1/2 tank.
Pappy used to say it's cheaper to fill the top half than the bottom half.

refill gas tank around town at 3/4 full, on highway at 1/2 full. my caution paid off during recent gas pipeline hack. same reason my ammo supply is always “complete.” i don’t understand why one buys top of the line “tools,” on credit no less, and then can’t or doesn’t bother to keep them always well fed.

As a dumb kid, I used to run our cars out of gas and NEVER replaced a fuel pump. As a dumb adult, I could run my Toyota to the kilometer and coast to the gas station and NEVER replaced a fuel pump EVER.
Liquid splashing around the tank draws heat from a pump motor that continously runs. a mostly empty tank cools that pump much less and the recirculating hot fuel that goes thru the pump does not contact the MOTOR ...you know ....the HOT part. Different vehicles have different pumps so YMMV but gas in the tank helps cool a $$$$ pump. Old tech doesn't count it was over-engineered compared to todays.

I prefer to fill up on weekends because I'm always strapped for time during the week. So if I don't think I can make it another week, I'll fill up a little early. When the low fuel light goes on, I know I've got a minimum of 60 miles, up to 100 miles depending on my driving style and whether I'm in the city or on the highway. Generally, I'm less than 1/4 tank when I refill.

Okay, I'll let you know when one of my fuel pumps fail. :ROFLMAO:

Between 1/4 tank and when the low fuel light comes on. The notion that you shouldnt let your tank get below 1/2 or 1/4 because of sediment in the bottom of your tank has largely been debunked.

Prefer not to go below half a tank. Anal retentive is my only defense.

That, and I ran out of gas once with the gauge clearly showing I had at least a quarter of a tank left.

Never again.

Normally, no lower than 1/4 tank - which allows for contingencies.

But, I’ll plan fuel stops to avoid filling up in NJ, because I detest the lines, the slowness of the process, and the lack of care shown by attendants.

I will also fill up in anticipation of bad weather, or long sit for the car, or a long trip thr next day.
You filling up on the NJTPK? Even NJ residents avoid that. My family fills up at Wawa. Their attendants are usually better trained and behaved than other NJ gas stations.

But is it true across vehicles? All of mine are routinely taken to E before filling up; only one dead pump and that was on a model known for dying pumps (mine lasted longer than most).

1999 Camry, 140k to 230k (still going)
2000 Saturn, zero to 116k
2001 Civic, zero to 176k
2004 Jetta, zero to 255k, new pump, then 255k to 314k
2010 Tundra, 73k to 163k
2011 Camry, zero to 227k (still going)

Can’t comment on my CRV as that was a recent hand-me-down and I suspect MIL filled between quarter and half. Waiting to see on this new Camry of ours.

Come to think of it, that Jetta had a fuel cooler, so heat should not have been a problem!
The Jetta just had a lift pump, it would only help prime when you started the car.

I have a predictable schedule that results in me being in different cities on different days

I try to time my fillup for when I’m in Appleton once a month since the 88e15 is up to 40 cents a gallon cheaper

I have a small gas tank so the Only problem is sometimes I will be getting too far below half before I would go there so I end up either filling or putting in just enough to make it.

Because I have a very small fuel tank I normally fill somewhere below half a tank, I have emptied it a few times (never stalled out) but normally fill before a long unexpected or vacation trip.

On a 2000 mile drive filling often is helpful with bio breaks but I prefer to be below half and on a long drive out west getting down around a quarter tank can be problematic when the next fuel station is 100 miles.

My 89 Sierra has the half moon gauges, when it gets down to a 1/4 tank and you make a turn it disappears so I never let it get below a 1/4, just don't trust it. Lucerne I let go to 1/8 in the summer and 3/8 in the winter.

I fill at about 1/2 tank normally.
My father would fill up when it got down to 3/4 full.
My mother's father never had more than 1/4 tank in his 4 cyl Chevy II.
In the late '60s he'd buy $1 of gas for the 82 mile round trip to his weekend house in rural VA.

Do you know how many gallons give or take a 1/2 gallon or so you have left in the tank when the low fuel light comes on?
I think the owners manual for my Ford Escort says approximately 2 gallons. The owners manual for the Versa doesn't say and I've only ran it that low a couple times but I suspect somewhere around 1-1.5 gallons.

When 1/4 tankful left now, but when younger, when the empty gas lit up. A new Costco opened up 5 minutes from work so I stop by before heading to work in the early morning and fuel up. Any other time of the day at that Costco gas station, you are waiting a long, long time to gas up. I take which one of four cars in the family needs fuel to work and doing this routine saves about $50/month so it's worth the hassle.

The 240s have 15 gallon tanks. They get filled at 1/2 empty. The Avalon gets filled at a 1/4.

I always let the needles get down to 1/8th of a tank before I refill. Now, if I’m out of town or on a road trip all bets are off. I may refill at 1/4 of a tank if I’m already stopped for a bathroom/rest break.

When I’m at half tank and usually I have plenty of Sunoco fuel perks or Get Go points

I fill up when the "low tank" fuel light comes on. Some say it will kill the fuel pump and others say that is no longer true? 🤔 Car is a 2006 Corolla.
