Unexpected mileage gain using Exxon gas

100% I get more MPG and power running Exxon and or Shell. I usually fill up with Sam's Club gas but those have barely any additives like Top Tier gas. So I just add Shell or Exxon from time to time to keep everything clean.

Maybe some of these still have the same amount of detergents 🤷‍♂️ . Wish they'd do another to see if any changes . :(

I used to work in O&G industry here in Houston in the 1990s. The way it works, when a gas station order gasoline (assuming it's Exxon), they'll call the carrier. Then the carrier goes to the nearest terminal. Assuming the nearest gasoline terminal is operated by Shell, the carreir goes there to load fuel. The operator on the terminal will ask for loading cards from the carrier to verify what station it's going to. The terminal will give approval to the carrier to load fuel. Then he'll/she'll choose Exxon additives to be added with the fuel. The fuel is refined by Shell with Exxon additives on it to be delivered to the Exxon gas station.
Pretty close to my 28 years experience. What's your take on "top tier" gas?

Where we live we only have one pipeline. The gasoline is all the same. The additive package and the ethanol is added at the "rack".

Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, Shell - etc have well funded R&D teams that develop formulas for both fuel and lubes - in my area it’s easy to find one of them and they are competitive on price …
We don’t have Sam’s or Costco anyway …

The spread between regular and premium is no longer a modest amount …
You're not kidding! I remember the comments on the old Cobalt SS forum.... "It's only twenty cents more expensive for premium!" LOL Those were the good old days. Now it's more like $1.20 difference!

Around here there is less of a gap. The other day when 87 at Phillips 66 was $2.61 Premium 93 for my motorcycle was $3.32. It is understood that you are in IL.
