Whats your opinion on people who work everyday?

Hmm.
That's the secret.

You don't have to be an expert in the market and you don't need an 'expert' advising you (to take their cut) and they can't outguess index funds over time. Invest in no-load index funds and don't look back and for goodness sake, don't sell. If the market goes down, BUY MORE. Hold them until you retire and you won't believe what they will be worth.

That’s what I tell my adult kids.

I have some that I work with that are like family. We spend a lot of time at work together. Occasionally we go out for a beer after work. If you spend a whole week on a job with a person they refer to it as being married up. Some I talk to on a daily basis even if it's just messaging back and forth. As weird as it may sound it's a bit of a mental health thing. We all understand how nuts the job and schedule is and it helps keep the sanity.

Coworkers you can rely on are very important at any job, especially your job working with trains.

Is it really a family though? I don't think people really hang out with them outside of work. They only interact during work becaise they have to
I think when we were younger, yes.

In 1999 I tore my meniscus playing floor hockey. I didn’t know one person in Phila so my then boss picked me up from the hospital after surgery. I took time off to recoup.

And my whole team visited me at my apartment. People are much different at the beginning of their careers imho. Ie my job then required 3 years of experience. Maybe 10 years ago she emailed me saying do you rememeber that time we cut work and were watching the filmimg of the movie? I said of course! But I didn’t. I literally had to google to see what movie it was based on location (it was only 3 miles from the office).

I also had a female friend with whom we were joined at the hip. Rumors flew in the office.
I am not sure how/why that happens between people. Especially the opposite sex.

So back then we did hang out outside of work.

Today, to your point, no. Especially having kids, seems our lives revolve around their schedules…

When I started my business in 1989, worked every day for seven months.

Stopped when I came in one Sunday morning at 7am. One job to do: configure a system, which took about two hours.

At 1pm, still hadn’t started that job! Took a vacation.

Keep dreaming. Same opportunity. That's funny. We don't even have the same rules.
Having a child with special needs or learning differences highlights with extreme clarity how true this statement is. Those who have the means are more able to navigate the system and provide opportunities for their child. Be it evaluations, private school, medical services, lawyers, or whatever else is needed to ensure the child gets proper services and an appropriate education. The cost of a psychoeducational assessment alone can range from $1000 to $6000 and is typically not covered by insurance. If you’re poor then you’re struck with whatever government healthcare and the local public school system calls proper and appropriate which isn’t much. Everyone technically has the same opportunities but money grants access to more of them.

I don't get it. I guess i had a big wakeup call at an early age when several family members including both my parents starting passing away at a young age. I used to go to work for 10 days in a row without a day off. Then I realized, hey it could all end tomorrow. Let's worry less about making money and set some time aside to enjoy life some. Even if it's just a relaxing day watching TV on the couch.

Anyways, with that being said, I see so many people just go to work day in and day out with no day off. I get you have to make a living, but still. There's always more work to be done tomorrow.

Opinions?
Where would we be without blue collar workers daily?

Beats me. It takes a little bit from everyone to make a world
My dad taught me this much. We (he and I) in IT spend money. It’s the folks out on the floor, the line, driving the trucks, that bring money in, and why we have a paycheck.

I would say even without adding in special needs education, the quality of public education is so polarized it's ridiculous. The low income public school systems suffer so bad compared to middle/high class school districts; overpopulated classrooms, teachers don't care, no after-school activities, no tutoring or additional educational help, and worse education overall. If you have a special needs child in one of these districts, you're basically out-of-luck.

Two of our kids have learning difficulties. One was able to qualify for services and has a 504 plan. She has over come the issues over the years. But the difficulties will never go away. It took lots of hard work and quite a bit of out of pocket expenses for medicine, tutoring, additional assessments, etc. to get to this point. Now the other one was borderline and therefore didn’t qualify for services. We have had to come out of pocket for everything, tutoring, assessments, etc. We are lucky to have access to proper resources and be in position to pay for services on our own. If not, we might have two barely literate kids. Both of whom are now A/B students. It had nothing to do with intelligence or pulling ourselves up by their boots straps and everything to do with the opportunities that we were able to provide for them. Because we (the parents) were fortunate enough to be given opportunities by our parents as well. Some aren’t so lucky.

Tried working every day but got anxiety and other mental stuff. So now I'm on a medical cannabis treatment.
I don't know how the situation is in the USA, but here in the UK, we have medical cannabis clinics.

I used to hourly contractor in software development so taking a day off during week or even holidays made me think twice and worked weekends as it was hourly.

Now working in less paying corporate software engineering job that has 23 paid days off and 11 paid holidays per year. In 3 years I earn 5 days more! I don’t work as much by a long shot.

I never looked at it that way but actually as I get older I should.

My brother has always worked for cos. (Euro) where they have 30 days off plus the holidays on day 1, so 7 more than what you post. They get a 12% co match and their bonuses are low 5 figures even for people who don't make a lot. Nobody is happy and that's always been puzzling to me. When I see that, I ask myself how are these 20 yo ever gonna get a Turbo S like their big boss? I'm happy at my job--what is that worth? You sound happy at yours.

I have more PTO and less holidays than you so about the same overall. Only these past 2 years I said I'm using them and not forfeiting them as is my co's culture. I used to work on my days off and it didn't bother me all that much. Dumb.

imho people at the tail end of their careers truly should share wisdom with 22 yo's starting out. I know I could have used some--for my first 3 years I did not do 401k nor stock purchase, stupidly. Again the driven will figure it all out themselves, but many could use guidance.

Well, I retired about 7 months ago. But now I am working again part-time at the same organization I left. I don't think I would have it any other way at this point in my life. I enjoy the freedom that my retirement has given me, while still contributing to something important and also still making some money.

Just one week ago I met a retired carpenter at a hockey game. He said he can work 1 week/mo and keep his full pension. He truly enjoyed seeing his coworkers and it’s on a university campus so he enjoyed staying a part of the “community.” Seemed like winning to me.

I had a stressful career doing things that left little margin for error. Fortunately, I am now in a financial position where work is no longer necessary and every day is like a vacation day in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont.

That is a coincidence. I also work at a university, on the engineering staff.

I think there is a theme emerging regarding university employees and rewarding careers.................................:)
My nasty neighbor works for the same university. She paid off her house before I did, and has been retired since 2021 in her 50's. I have no idea how her coworkers would tolerate her lol During Covid I think they got a check for $5k to help work from home. Anyway, it is a prestigious university and I'd be proud to work there, never came across an opportunity to do so.

The ice rink manager gave my son a tour because he asked. It would have been over the top if we got to ride on the Zamboni, I alluded to it hahahahaha :ROFLMAO:

Last summer my grand daughter (with friend) was visiting from Florida and I took them out on the football field to romp around, etc.. Just us. Quite the experience!
