Not around my parts. Dino oil went from 2 bucks to 4.50 or so, milk went from 2 bucks to about 2.50.

Same here. Milk is at it's lowest price here in about 5 years. Can't say the same for oil.

Gallon of milk 2005 $1.85, today $3.50. Annual increase 9.54%

Jug of Mobil 1 2005 $17.99, today $26.50. Annual increase 5.69%

I guess milk prices are different in various parts of the country. In 2008 we were paying close to 4.00 a gallon for milk along with 5.00 a gallon for gasoline.
Currently milk is about 2.70 a gallon and gasoline about 4.00 a gallon.

Yeah but that is not saying much. A gallon of milk was 3.99 in Chula Vista in 2008.

This year for me has been the lowest net prices in 25 years. Watch the specials board. I just bought 12 qts at Sears for Val Dura Blend for $.97, clearance. I have multiple 5 qt jugs of QSUD, VNG, G-oil all FAR, just paid the tax. Mobil 5k 5qts with filter $5 AR. I have a stock of more than 50 qts and a pile of filters.

Chicago has some of the highest in the country, despite being neighbors to Wisconsin where a ton of it comes from...

You can not compare gas prices the state tax for a gallon of gasoline is 35.3 a gallon. But yet roads are not maintained

This could not be due to the business having to pay a tobacco, Food retail, Alcohol retail, building permit, Business Affairs and Consumer Protection fees.

Along with maintenance, paying employees 8.25 minimum wage, Retailers' Occupation Tax, Property Tax, Pay roll taxes, and I am sure there are more taxes that I can not name on top of my head.

$1.73 at Costco; $1.89 at Aldi.

I think more of it has to do with local collusion to maintain prices at a high level than anything else.

If you are talking state to state then I would agree, but I was not doing that. I was saying gasoline prices in my area of Southern Ca. in 2008 was roughly 5.00 and now is about 4.00 and motor is higher now than 2008. To my knowledge the state gas tax hasn't gone up or changed here in the last 4 or 5 years.

Edit: Off topic, but I noticed that Arizona's state gas tax is only .18 which is of course roughly .17 less than Ca. yet many times over the last 15+ years when I go to Phoenix, the gasoline there is as much as .70 cents a gallon cheaper - usually at least .50 a gallon less.
As of right now according to my buddy who lives in Phoenix and on line gas price site many stations in Phoenix are at 3.09. Most of the stations around me are 3.85 and up!

You are correct on gas prices, I lived in Chula Vista from 2003-2011. Here in Maricopa which is not very far from Phoenix is 3.24 and if I went for a nice 20 minute drive gas prices are 3.14.
Also for California has a "other" gas tax.

15.2 cents“Other Taxes” columns include a 2.25% state sales tax for gasoline and at least a 1.25% local sales tax for various counties in the state for diesel. The tax rate applied is a weighted average based upon county populations. A 2 cpg state UST fee is also included

That doesn't make sense. If Albertson's started selling milk for $2.49 every day of the year when everyone else charges $3.99, you can bet that pretty much everyone will go to Albertson's. We're not talking about a nickel difference, we're talking a dollar difference compared to other states that are much further from the source.

And guess what, if everyone's is going to Albertson's because of the cheap milk, they'll probably just do all their shopping there...which is where profits are made. That's called a "loss leader".

My dad was a 1 oil brand kind of guy... so he'd always wait for a sale and stock up... When I found Syn Blend for 2.49/qt with no rebates or hoops required, I bought a few year supply. Most of us who have a "stash" have been bargain chasing.

In Montreal we seem to get decent prices on any brand, even Mobil 1 has started to hit the 35$ mark. The key is to only stock up during a sale.

We just had Valvoline Synpower Full Synthetic on sale at Walmart for 19.99 for a 5L jug.

Even Pennzoil Platinum, if bought by their Gallon format (4.73 L and NOT their 5L format) you can usually get it on sale for 24$

So, finally, guys have a reason to shop the sales and cut coupons.

As a peace offering I propose that we start a Women’s Auxiliary, to the BITOG forum, for the discussion of milk prices. Maybe, in time, they could better absorb your assertion that the price of milk somehow explains the spike in the price of a quart of oil. It's beyond me.

Nah, not offended. What I was doing was showing oil price increases in comparison to something else. Doing that puts oil prices in perspective to the cost of living. Looking at oil alone, bad. Looking at oil in the big picture of everything we buy, not so bad. Thats what I think you are missing.
