What pet is better in your opinion: dog or cat?

i prefer cats, but love dogs too. some cats like Siberian race cats can be a good alternative if you like dogs, but can only get a cat. my niece has one and one of my friend has one too. both are extremely affectionate and dog like in their behavior but they are still totally independent. they are big powerful cats. i am allergic to cats and i have no allergies with these cats.

The two best I've had:

Grew up with a Maine Coon cat, he lived a long time and was tough, very friendly, playful and followed us throughout the woods. Even on long hikes. He'd even check on me when I injured myself.

Currently have a Norwegian Elkhound dog. She's been a perfect companion. Happy to fly in my plane, excited when she sees the runway on descent, and especially happy when the FBO golf cart comes out! A great hunting companion, play companion, goes everywhere, loves everyone.

Without a doubt, the dog is a better companion though. Any activity from wading in streams (won't swim in the ocean), to long distance all weather walks, communicating her needs, and general intelligence.

Not my cat, but quite similar:

Great looking Elkhound! Had one growing up. Only drawback was he shed like nothing I’ve ever seen.

Cat. Dogs are braindead poop machines barking at anything that moves. SHUT UP.

I haven't had to clean up poop since my dogs got house broke....They go to the very far corner of the yard to do their business.

Cat owners are forever married to a litter box which is one of the most revolting things I've ever dealt with!

An odd question. Dogs are submissive creatures. So if you like exerting dominance you can enter into a satisfying codependency with a dog*. Well, it doesn't work with Cuddles. He merely tolerates me on good days. As do my cats. I have a better chance of surviving with my cats, I think. I could be wrong - they are devious. Maybe I should look into a pet goldfish.

*I'm sort of kidding

As I’m typing this, one of my girlfriend’s cats is meowing loudly to go outside at 7:30am, she is so needy! My own dog will happily sleep all morning until I am ready to take him for a walk. So that’s just one of many reasons why I love dogs more. But it obviously can vary depending upon the individual personalities of each pet. Her other cat will happily sleep on the bed and not bother us in the morning.

Although I grew up with dogs as a kid I am a cat person. I like how cats clean themselves, can be fine left alone when on vacation and don’t need to be walked. We have a 14 y.o. Calico.

I'm a dog person through and through and wife is allergic to cats so it works out.

Both my wife and daughter were allergic to cats when we got married 14 years ago.

About 5 years ago they started taking care of some friends cats when they went out of town and realized they might not be as allergic as they once were.

Now we have 3 of the stupid things in the house and who knows how many collected outside.

So, yea, I thought I was safe......I was not.

Over my life I've owned quite a number of cats and dogs. Generally, I really like both. Of the two, though, I have seen a LOT more variability in the personalities of cats. Often in negative ways. I've had some cats (mostly male and fixed) that were sweet and affectionate and others that were super crabby most of the time. Our current cat is female and HATES to be picked up... Hiss and slash and bite your face level hates it. My wife keeps trying it and has the battle scars to prove it. It's to the point where it leaves the room when my wife comes in. It likes me because I ignore it unless it wants my attention.

I much prefer dogs. Being retired they keep me busy lol. Additionally they are better than any security system. This one is a 90lbs bundle of muscle and a sweetheart but you wouldn’t want to meet her while breaking in the house.
