I have had both and only have a cat now. Probably be my last pet due to my age. Dogs are great pals but needy. My two year old cat has bonded with me and has to see what I am doing anytime I move around. I do enjoy her and she is a great part of the family.

Like both cats and dogs but always preferred dogs.
A house dog can also perform the useful function of being both alarm and autonomous home defense.
A cat might be capable of the former but certainly not the later, and a cat has nothing like a dogs' loud bark and growl.
Few intruders would continue their efforts with 130 lbs of snarling dog leaping against an entrance.
We had such a dog and he was a wonderful companion to us and also very good with small children as well as our older two. Small children strangers were allowed to play with his tail and paws, which he didn't like and were allowed to grab his long coat and use him as a walker.
He was not good with strange adults unless they liked having a dog that could knock them down growling at them.

One is not better than the other. Personal preference. I prefer dogs but I like cats too.
Dogs don't relieve themselves in a box then walk all over your kitchen counter. Nuff said. 
My baby cat was my best buddy. He would run to me when I got home and would sit in my lap all day if allowed. His replacement is a disapointment. Our dog is a great dog and great watch dog.

I’m more of a dog guy but we had a cat once as well. Not bad besides having to do the litter box lol. I personally prefer dogs especially labs and german shepherd and bigger dogs. Currently have a purebred lab named Dixie.
Dogs hands down, Always had one or more Pitbull Terriers since I was a kid. Currently 2 Female littermates, Little over 2 years old.
This was a couple days ago at 6:45am having coffee on the back patio, Wife feeds them at 7am so they were extra twitchy

Ain't that the truth. If my cat weighed over a hundred pounds, there's no way I'd feel safe sleeping in the same house as her.
