What oil to use for extended change interval (10k)

It's easier to talk about what synthetics wouldn't last 10k miles

First off, if you are topping off oil, the amount of time of your OCI will increase so it's kinda like cheating.

What stores do you have near you that sell synthetic oil?

If you want to keep costs down, get the oil change specials where you get 5 quarts and an oil filter for $25

Mobil 1 EP 5 qts at wal mart is 27.50$, right now you can go in Advance auto and get the 5 qts of mobil 1 EP and a Mobil 1 filter for 29.99$ great deal since no rebate are going on now, Exactly how much is your Amsoil per quart, I thought long and hard about going to amsoil, I had to stretch out my Oil changes to help compensate but the real kicker why I didn't go to Amsoil was the shipping charges to me very expensive and not worth it.

Follow the manual while in warranty, as Bill mentioned. Save even more money by buying conventional on sale for 5k oci's.

Uh...let me see if I understand...you are using Amsoil for extended drains already....what is the question???

Maybe M-1EP or Edge. But are you really saving anything?

I get the preferred customer price and buy in 2.5 gal jugs ($64.45) so that equates to $6.45/qt. Shipping is $15.43/4 cars = $3.86. So $10.31/qt for the Amsoil.

He's not extending them on the level Amsoil uses for their money saving graphs and such. Does anyone really run SSO to 25k miles even if they do 90%+ highway driving? I've yet to see a 25k mile SSO UOA. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

The 08 Camry is my mother-in-laws who has difficulty finding the time for a 10k change. Her drive to my house is appr. 1hr. I explained the concern around the warranty but expressed my comfort with Amsoil and going 10k.

That's why I wanted to check out the pricing on suggested extended interval oils.

Anything over $10/qt is way too much for a 10k OCI oil especially if that the XL line you are getting. Could a local Amsoil dealer help with getting those costs down?

You would save about half by going with M1 but its up to you both are great oils, the Amsoil at 6.45 per qt would be my choice but when you add shipping it means you could almost change the oil twice with the M1 EP or pocket the extra money to pay for tires.

And, who are we to say he is spending to much on oil. It is his money, not ours.

Johnny, he threw cost into the equation, not me.

If he wants our opinions, let's give them to him.

Back40, I just saw your math. $15.43/4 cars = $3.86/qt?

The $10.31/qt alarmed me but I just realized you might have done the shipping wrong to get a per quart price

How many quarts are coming when you are getting those 4 cars worth of oil?

Oil opinions yes, money no. But one cost factor no one seems to talk about on here. He stated he orders his oil in larger quantities to help save on cost and shipping. If he drove to his local Wal Mart, how ever far away that is, he would more than likely buy enough oil to change one car at a time. That is multiple trip. You have got to figure in to the cost of the Wal Mart oil the price of gas, plus wear and tear on the car. So exactly what is the savings? We really do not know.

I should not have added $3.86 shippinig to each qt. $3.86 xtra per oil change so only about .75 cents extra per quart. Total per qt is $7.20

Before going with Amsoil, I purchased Castrol GTX from Wally World but never made a special trip just for oil. Usually when grocery shopping, but I appreciate your logic.

$7.20/qt sounds really good for Amsoil. If you're really trying to save money, perhaps stretching to 12.5k or 15k on the OCI if you're feeling adventurous but only on the highway driven cars. I'm not sure even about the 10k OCI on the short trip car though

Well 7.20 for Amsoil vs 5.50 for Mobil 1, your opinion is the only one that counts, the amsoil has been doing great you wont save very much. Here we go with the math again, 18qts per change at 9 changes a year you would only save 275.00 a year but then like Johnny said you would spend gas and wear and tear on your car going to and fro wal mart, me I go there for about everything amd sometimes just go to get out of the house so the trip would not be a big deal to me.

So he is smart enough to order more than a few oil changes if he mail orders but not smart enough to do the same if he went to a Wal-Mart?

But I agree that it is his $$ and warranty.
