i have a 68 plymouth valiant 225 /6.the engine just turned over for the first time,i know this because the car was purchased new by my granfather..i would like your suggestions for a good oil to use.i know the newer oils dont have some of the additives the old motors reqiure..i am currently using havoline 10w30..the car is a daily driver,i travel 60-80 miles a day round trip 5-6 days/wk.it is mainly open 2lane road, very little city...i change oil every 2500miles,and always have on everything i have owned..the money spent to buy the oil and filters is not an issue with me,keeping clean oil in the motor is,and i will continue my oc habit..i thankyou in advance for your input...

I am sure some members will chime in soon.

If you are changing your oil that frequently (which I think is a waste) then I would suggest the cheapest 10w30 or 10w40 dino you can find.

Steve

I agree with Steve, just about any oil will do well. Those old slant 6's are tough! I bet you are thinking of the reduced levels of metals like Zink but I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.

I don't understand your trepidation on using a longer OCI. I understand you sentimental feelings but you are probably wasting your money. Congrats on the old Valiant!

i dont want something cheap,i want something that will give me good service..i guess a lot of people might think its a waste to change so often..its my car and that is how it is going to be done..thanks for your comment anyway

Amsoil SSO or HDD change every 3k or 3 months no worries

yea the slants are tough, you are right,i am thinking about the additives with the older engines and understand each one is different..yea i probably could spend less money, but just feel that i am helping it to have a longer life

thanks for the replies so far..how far past the 3000 rule should i venture??

Go to your local Walmart and get some Rotella T5 10W-30 HDEO. It has all of the additives that car would need.

Now the most important thing, can you post some pictures of that old beauty. Great old cars.

Your call... No skin off my back, just thought I could save you a few bucks and you still have a long engine life. Even at 5K miles you are more than fine with this engine.

It's all good

I recommend Shell Rotella T6. And I also recommend running it to AT LEAST 4000 miles. I think a vintage engine like the Slanty will respond much better to a quality HDEO in the 40 weight range and a longer change interval than to a 10w30 conventional passenger car motor oil and short change intervals. The cost will be a wash or maybe a net savings if you double your change interval and spend the extra for RT6, and it will be better for the engine overall.

Do you have to adjust the valves every 10K to 12K miles like I had to on my slant 6 225 1976 Volare?

I did not know there were any slant 6 225s still on the road. I can't remember the last time I saw one.

As for oil, the Rotella 5T 10W-30 would be great for that engine. It is good enough for diesel engines, and low in cost.

If you want you could go with the Rotella 15W-40 for summer use, but the 5T 10W-30 is good enough.

If money is no object go with GC.

One time the friends I loafed with had a Valiant with a blown straight 160, and a Newport with a 383 that had a bad body and back frame. We removed the engines and tranys, cut the engine mount frame from the newport, and pounded in the wheel wells of the Valiant with a sledge. Then welded the engine mount frame from the newport into the valiant, put headers on the 383, dropped the 383 and its trany into the Valliant, Blew out the original rear end of the valiant, cut down the Newport rear end to the width of the Valiant and put that in it.

Way too much motor for that car. It ended up getting rolled over with 4 people in it when too much power caused loss of control. No one got hurt.

Those were fun days.

My slant 6 (198) was sold at ~ 200,000 + miles running great but, nsuing about 1 qt per 1,500 miles. I used Pennzoil& QS in those days and 3,000 mile oil changes. Can't remember the viscosity but, I'm sure it was what the manufacture recomended.

Keep in mind that this is a carb'd engine. He does have a decent amount of warmed up mileage, but do we know how the carb is doing after ..(counting) 42 years?

i will give the rotella a try...if it is my carb you are refering to,i just put a new one on about 2 months ago and gained about 4mpg.the other carb was the original and had been rebuilt once,it was pretty worn out when i replaced it....it is a carter,a lot better than the holley 1920 i think...

i would be more than happy to put up a couple of pics, could someone enlighten me on how to do it??cant figure it out on this site..

Well, that answers that question. It would be nice to see how 68 jetting managed for fuel metering.

I'd be looking (might be harder than I think) an electronic ignition harness from a later model. I don't know how well I would "back adapt" to points and the "tune on a curve".

On my own stuff I'd open the points as wide as I could manage and close the plug gaps (there was one other thing I can't recall) ..so that it would basically be in spec over the longest portion of the curve instead of drifting out one end.

That's it I would put HDD up against rotella any day of the week 2.5k I would dare something better.
