What Exactly Makes An Oil "European Formula"

I talk about GTI and GolfR in North America version, not Audi. Yes VAG finally copy the 8 years Lexus technology. Audi makes good engines may be right. Good does not mean reliable. There are some legendary VAG engines, but not many anymore from what they offer these days. Look VW sale number in USA, compared to Hyundai and KIA, it is not even close

Yes Hyundai and Kia will finance to just about anybody and the cars are much cheaper. Of course they will sell more.

I also have to lol @ suggesting an H/K is more reliable, especially the engine, than a VAG product.

They have dual injection, but still don't know how to make brake booster so making owners replace one at 120,000 miles as "preventive" maintenance.
 
Reviving this thread because I came across a post from LSJ that stated "ACEA specs do not prohibit the use of ester base oils." This was also stated by an Amsoil guy. That is news to me. .

If you remove SA out of the equation, what exactly makes a European oil better than EP equivalent?

For example - Mobil 1 EP 5w30 vs ESP 5w30 or Amsoil SS 5w30 vs Amsoil Euro 5w30.

The only glaring differences are HT/HS (higher on Euro) and lower SA (lower on Euro).

If you look at Noack of Amsoil SS, it's much better than their Euro line. The only thing I can think of are specific engine tests from the OEMs that recommend a Euro spec oil.

The key are specific manufacturer tests and limits. ACEA is just starting point.

Kinda like EA888 water pumps over the last...ohhh 20 years.😉
 
Not true - all markets in the developed world (including us finally as of this year! Way too late...) have a corporate fuel consumption standard.
Japan is worse for "CAFE style" regulations than the USA. That's why Japan seems to be the leaders in researching and using ever thinner and thinner oil.

Its pretty embarrassing that Australia only introduced one this year - it was us and Russia as the only OECD countries without one which is not a great look. We are also still running Euro 5 emissions standards and pretty high sulphur fuel...

As a result we get a lot of crappy technology engines dumped in our market and we have even worse average fuel efficiency rates than the US, and you guys all drive those ridiculous huge "truck" things!

Of course our conservative politicians all decried the standard's introduction as something was going to be the end of the world lol :rolleyes:

The Japanese have almost similar driving habits as American suburbanites/city drivers - but they also drive smaller cars, the SUV/pickup craze here hasn’t translated over to Japan. Else Toyota would be selling Tacomas and Tundras like hot cakes back home. The Camry is NLA in Japan. The kei car/truck is popular on the streets of Tokyo/Osaka/Nagoya but bigger cars are found in the suburbs. Add to that taxation around the size and engine of a car and mandatory but very through inspections. The Japanese don’t drive that much - it’s expensive to own a car there, and their public transit/passenger railroad infrastructure just… works.
 
I'm getting to the point that I don't know what to believe anymore. I switched to Mobil 1 0W-40 because I thought it was the cats meow, and a first rate European formulated motor oil. Now this guy says it's basically crap, and can shear in just a few hundred miles.

So now what? Should I bump up my oil changes to every other week!
