The Japanese sell 4WD with bench seats and diesel, quite reliable ones, some legendary, just not in US.

I seem to recall reading that Toyota is going to contact out a diesel engine for their vehicles in the US.

"Yep, Honda and all other Japanese car manufacturers make junk,"

I'm not saying your right or wrong, but, why do people buy them?

Gurkha, If you are not an American you will not understand. If you are an American living abroad I'll say this- you assume wrong. As a retired Marine I have learned to bleed red, white, and blue. It saddens me that my fellow Americans have such short memories or are quick forgive and/or forget about Japenese atrocities during WWII such as Japanese soldiers running down American POW's for fun during the Bataan Death March. Maybe owners of Japanese vehicles never lost a loved one in a war, I don't know and I surely don't understand any man of the era driving a Japanese vehicle.
Not much has changed in the Japanese system of government since the end of WWII just their tactics. Just as we are changing our tactics in Iraq, The Japanese will no longer bomb their way into our country but buy their way into our capitalistic society. They buy our land to build plants and bring their people here and send the profits back to Japan. But I digress. Of course this all very simplistic and abbreviated so I'll finish by saying this: I will never belittle someone for driving a Japanese car, it is pointless and immature. Imagine getting a call from your only son whom you love dearly telling you he just got arrested for rape. That is how I feel when I see an American driving a Japanese vehicle. I for one will never, ever drive a Japanese vehicle or understand the allure to buy one. I love my Ford truck made proudly at the Kentucky Truck Plant. Now back to oils. Semper Fi
P.S. Two days ago I seen a couple of Asian decent driving a Malibu, it made my day.

I see your point, I am not an American, just someone who lived in US for the 17 years, I have been accused and confronted for driving imports, I guess then you should not drive German either, their war record is nothing to talk about, in fact worse than Japanese. So in this framework, Vietnamese, Chinese Indians and other Asians should not drive or buy anything from the west in general, point is US pushes Globalization, kinda ironic when you make statements like this, US is busy sucking out the world in that sense, Coca Cola for example, they sell pesticide laced drinks, when confronted, they attack the report, make US government threaten the local as well as the country government. Many farmers today commit suicide in India and China, result of US and other Western countries forcing WTO norms and flooding the market with cheap goods thereby killing the local small farmer. People grin and bear it, so does the corrupt so called elected government, yet no one says, boycott west, finally, don't you think Japan paid the price for their so called alleged war crimes with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and speaking of War crimes, US has not been the choir boy either, plenty of crimes, far more heinous in past and now in present, Abu Garib for one. War brings out the real animal in us humans, no one can escape from the criminal mindset and no one is above others, its a great equalizer for one.

I don't see Japan, South Korea, Germany along with many other countries we do trade with as enemies. I think they are important trading partners. However, I think among some of these countries there needs to a little more give and a little less take.

Well, my uncle was killed fighting the Nazis, Battle of the Buldge... I'd still drive a Porsche. My Mom drives a VW and that was her brother. Forgive and forget. fwiw, if anyone ever sees the History Channel special on the sinking of the Leopouldville, my Uncle RJ Clark is featured (66th ID). Very sad story, a totally wreckless troop manouvre done Christmas Eve 1944 across The Channel without competent escorts, screening force or rescue assets. A German sub got him and 1000 other US Army personnel. The story was covered-up my Rooslevelt and Churchill until very recently. My grandparent went to their death never knowing what happened to their son. ________ Bless his soul. Where are my darn Posche keys?

Well, our household currently has a '96 Saturn Sl2, which is designed and built in Tennessee, so don't say I'm un-supportive of domestic vehicles. At the time, GM had a good product out (it seemed so) and despite all of the problems we've had with it, I'll still take it over a '96 Corolla or Civic ANY day. And yes, I'm of Asian decent as well.

But sadly, GM's products are no longer competitive in their respective segments, which gives me no reason to consider their products.

And please, don't get my thread locked. If you feel so strongly to discuss this further, PM me (or the person you're duking it out with), so that this thread doesn't get locked.

Thanks.

I'm getting quoted $19,000 on a Civic EX AT Sedan right now. ...

Didn't know you were including the destination charge. If that includes it then that's a very good deal, IMO. If you decide on a Civic EX and you DO get it for $18K then that would be a GREAT below invoice deal, wouldn't it?

Not really. My recollection is that invoice on a 2007 Civic EX Automatic, with destination, is $18,200. Honda has a 3% holdback that is based upon MSRP.

So, it is certainly possible for me to pay $18,000, and the dealer would STILL be making $400 from me, if not more due to other volume based incentives.

Compare that to VW. The difference between dealer invoice and MSRP on a base model Jetta is about $300.

Well, I'm at least 1/2 German and 1/8 Swedish so I decided to buy a Saab 93 (parts content 70% German, 30% Swedish according to the window sticker)..

No, actually the real reason I decided to buy a Saab is that I could get the employee discount on them, so I took one for a test drive and I really like it, but then I found out about the European Delivery program, so I decided to buy one that way instead of using the employee discount. (This allowed me to legally drive at speeds that would get one tossed in jail here...)

It replaces my 1996 Ford Contour..and one of the things, albeit very minor, that made me think the Saab is a good replacement is that the reverse lockout works the exact same way. The Contour's transmission is built in Germany and that style of reverse lockout seems to be common on the European cars that don't have reverse to the left of 1st. (That's a dumb place to put it, by the way, as although they require you to push down on it before it'll go into reverse, you may accidentally push down on it enough and end up in reverse when you wanted 1st..)

A good friend just got an 06 matrix for $100 over invoice.

Given the premiums being had for civics (ridiculous), and their less than stellar styling (lots of glass = very hot in the summertime), along with Honda's poor selection of rubber and plastic materials (longevity-wise), I think that a matrix at a good deal price would beat a civic...

People dont buy cars because they are patriotic to a their country. Most buy cars which they deem reliable because they already have enough things to do during their day and the last thing they want is a dead car complicating their day! History has shown that Japanese cars are more reliable than American cars so people buy these cars. Word of mouth is a powerful way to advertise for your company. My friend once went to a japanese restaurant and told me the food was horrible, so i dont think twice about going there yet i drive a japanese cars. If someone is going to spend 5 figure amount on a car, the last thing they want is to spend more money on repairs. I bought a lexus and not toyota because JD Power Assoc. rated it 1st with the least complaints among owners. Now if they had said the same about any american cars, you bet i would be driving an american car.

"History has shown that Japanese cars are more reliable than American cars so people buy these cars."

People wave Toyota and Honda emblems around like they're some sort of talisman against automotive evil spirits, and then pretend that Japanese cars don't have problems while bad mouthing other makes. As others have commented it's funny hear that Ford has a crummy minivan because the transmissions tend to fail, while Honda has a very good minivan with a bad transmission. Maybe it's merely the work of anti-Honda shills, but some sites suggest that new Hondas still have transmission problems. Toyota, Acura, Lexus, etc, also have problems, some pretty serious. Instead of judging quality by make one needs to look at model. and to weigh some problems a lot more than others. In any case the Japanese don't even have a configuration of vehicle that we've wanted for about 20 years, so quality is a moot point.

"In any case the Japanese don't even have a configuration of vehicle that we've wanted for about 20 years"....

What, exactly is driving Toyota's drive to the top of the sales heap if they're attempting to sell a bunch of ill-configured cars that nobody wants? So far the only American sedan to outsell the Camry is the Taurus, and that only lasted for a year. WHO's making the undesirable vehicles?

I think his point was that there are those who want things the Camry doesn't offer, believe it or not.

The Camry might well be to cars what McDonald's is to restaurants.

Oh, I never suggested the Camry is all things to all people....you couldn't give me one for free. It was just a grand sweeping statment about Japanese cars in general that was a bit confusing, considering how well the Accord and Camry sell in America. As for me, I'm more of an Altima 3.5 SE kinda guy. :-)
