I am possibly considering a new 2024 Mitsubishi outlander sport / trail edition, any info on these? , also looking at the 2024 SUV Subaru cross trek premium model, sort of like the Mitsubishi because of the lack of overly technical complexities and electronic features and simplicity over the Subaru cross treks, any input (pros & cons) are welcome.

There are tons of Outlanders in my area and I know quite a few people that own them and never hear of any complaints. The Subaru Crosstrek is a good unit too. Tough decision there for sure.

I don't see many Mitsubishi cars here in Michigan. Lots of Crosstreks on the road here. A friend has had one for a few years now and puts a lot of commuting miles on. No mention of any issues with his car.

I have an Outlander with the V6 3.0 SAWC 2014 model bought new, now with ~85K. Has never been in the shop for anything. I've maintained it by the book with proper fluid changes, one set of brakes, two batteries and three sets of tires. Nothing else. The Sport model is smaller with a four cylinder. Never drove one of those. Ten year/100K warranty is a huge plus.

Mitsubishi generally makes reliable cars. They are kinda spartan inside with hard plastic surfaces and simple controls. Mine has leather seats. I have driven it to Florida several times and it is acceptably comfortable on longer trips. Gas mileage is so so and it needs premium for best performance. I'd buy another one. Never had any experience with Subaru except my brother had one a long time ago and it was reliable also.

You have a tough choice.

Not specific to the outlander; but the 2 and 2.4 engines in them have been out forever. The newer years have an updated ECU but everything else is pretty much the same; simple no-thrills-no-frills 4 cyl with a simple AWD. Unfortunate that the SAWC is only available in the highest non-sport Outlander trim.

EDIT: I even see the interior is still the same as a 2015 outlander with just an updated headunit.

The vehicle itself is fine.
The fact that Mitsubishi has joined the Renault/Nissan alliance increases its chance for longevity in the US marginally.
The fact that this alliance is providing them with some much needed product is a plus.
The problem, as I see it, is the lack of a dealer network.
The fact that what dealer network they have is dwindling dramatically is alarming.
In Central Ohio for instance, we have gone from either four or five dealers to one.
Even if you don't frequent dealers, access to them matters.
Either way, it doesn't bode well.

They're very solid unloved cars. They've been making them for a decade or more by now so minor issues don't exist. People call the interiors "bad" but it's such a solid creak and rattle free interior and overall the quality is better than the interior in my 2021 escalade which has minor creaks and rattles with subpar seat stitching. My daughter got the gt model with awd and the 2.4 and it never had an issue because i changed the cvt, diff, and t case fluid along with the brake fluid two times and one radiator drain. With maintenance jatco cvt's are perfectly fine. All those that cry about them being bad after the jatco unit blows up at 110k or so will say "the cv what" when you ask them how many cvt fluid changes they had on the transmission. If I was buying one for myself I'd get the better fwd 2.0L version.

My friends have had 3 trouble free Outlanders -an '11, '13 and '17- so the data is now a bit dated. I'd own one.

How does the Crosstrek compare to an Outlander moneywise?

Thanks for the alert re dealerships.
Near me, a big one closed and a place with high turnover 15 miles north, became a Mitsubishi dealership.
I suppose a cheap, "Let's open one here and see", dealership doesn't instill confidence.

I just had a 2024 Outlander rental for a week. The exterior design is well done imo, quiet cabin and the seats are good. The entire rest of the vehicle is terrible, one of the worst modern cars I've driven. It's clear this company has a shoestring development budget. Sad because of some of fantastic products they used to make in the past. Stay far away.

How many Mitsubishi dealers are close by? If these are exclusively made in Japan what's the parts availability look like? They seem to be seeing a sales increase but only a few years ago Mitsubishi was close to leaving the US market.

I had a 2007 Outlander with the 3.0 and 6 speed auto. Fantastic car. Total tank in the winter with the AWD. What holds me back on any of the new Mitsubishi vehicles is the exclusive use of CVT transmissions.

there is one Mitsubishi dealer in town, and next is about 90 miles away, and one Subaru dealer in town, parts availability seem ok,though I am going to talk to a friend that has a body shop and see what he thinks,

The previous gen Outlander and Outlander Sport was a Mitsubishi design, made by Mitsubishi, and made pretty well.
Now I believe they Renault/Nissan designs with Mitsubishi badging.... Not a good sign for Mitsubishi (Suzuki did this before leaving) but I guess if/when they fold up soon, you can still get parts from Nissan.

They have terrible depreciation if you decide you don’t like it or get into accident vs Subaru CrossTrek.

Parts are slower to come by as Mitsubishi dealers are few and far between.

Subaru CrossTrek has reputation for high reliability.

Good luck .

now have to add the 2024 Mazda CX-30 to the list, they look really nice with a lifetime power train warranty (dealer supplied),more user friendly.

I had one as a rental, hated it based on size. Im 6ft, 200lbs, felt very cramped. Underpowered and very basic. Granted I likely didn’t have the premium model. I’m also not a fan of the non touchscreen interface. Child car seats ? Couldn’t even fit with them behind me. This may not be a consideration for you.

The good? Sporty design on the interior and sharp handling. My 21 civic is far more spacious.

the 2.0 and 2.4 is the same engine as hyundai/kia and chrysler have (the world engine). But we never had issues with them in mitsubishis....

Only the short block design. Heads, internals and quality in the mitsu block is vastly superior to the h/k variant.

The opposite I believe. Mechanically it's still Mitsu from what I can see and only a slight facelift from the previous gen outlander sport.
