Nokian R5 winter tires, what is your experience?

My daughter is taking the R3’s for her car so back in the market.

Stopping by our long-time tire dealer (Manchester NH) next week for new winter tires. They sell a lot of Michelin, Conti and Nokian winter tires. Going to see what he thinks about the Michelin vs VikingContact vs Hakkapeliitta R5’s. This tire-review test overall was a three way tie, with each one of the three have a particular strength.

But I’ve never seen a longevity test and don’t keep winter tires once they are worn to 6/32nd. It’s easy to sell used tires for Subarus so that’s worked for me.

If you have or feel like opening a Conti Credit card - extra $90 in rebate. I use mine just for tire purchases. That may sway your decisions, it did for me.

Discount tire took $110 off immediately for me last week when I was ordering tires. Not in the mood for mail in rebate. I told them to take it off or I will just get DM-V2 in Costco. So they took it off.

So - seems everyone has extended their winter tires rebates into November.

Bridgestone - $80.
Continental - $110.
Cooper - $50.
Firestone - $50.
Goodyear - $100.
Hankook - $80
Michelin - $60.
Nokian - $80.
Pirelli - $80.
Vredestein - $140.

Spoke with the dealer at length about the various tires. The Nokians are most popular in his neck of the woods (Manchester, NH ). The Michelins are second. The General Altimax Arctic 12 (AKA Gislavid NordFrost 100) is the most popular of the lower-cost tires. They do not sell many Nordman nor Continental VikingContact 7’s and he had no opinion.

The Hakkapelliita R5’s and Michelins X-Ice Snow were within a few dollars per tire before and after rebate. We went with the R5’s. They are mounted on JDM BBS 17x7 forged wheels that are stronger yet 6 lbs less than the stock cast wheels. Very little wheel weight was required, across from the valve stem.

The new tread depth is 11/32nds (8.7mm). As previously the tires have a wear indicator molded in. When the snowflake disappears (4mm is about 5/32nd) they no longer legally qualify as winter tires in Austria and other parts of Europe.

The 2020 R3’s we had were made in Russia. To my surprise (since they opened an American factory) these were made in Finland. Who knows what the compound differences are. The tread is not radically different from the R3, and most winter tires these days seem to have very similar tread block geometry. (R5 to R3 below).

The Norwegian magazine MOTOR is usually the first one to test the latest offerings for winter tires. Winter tires are mandatory in Finland November 1 to 31 March and Sweden December 1 to 31 March so they have to jump on it.

You used to be able to access it directly. No longer, but other outlets publish their results. They included the Michelin CrossClimate2 as an A/S A/W baseline.

The Viking7 has been replaced by the Viking8 so seems they are being sold on closeout.

Blizzak WS90 is also on closeout.

The XIce Snow's domination on ice is why I go for those tires. I have AWD plus a locker so snow is never a problem but stopping on ice absolutely is.

Well, so much for those expensive Nokian r5’s.

All four blown to pieces after running over that thing the police lay across the road to blow tires on cars that take off from them during high speed chases earlier called off.

Was dark and going around a corner to work this morning on the highway…..boom.

They don’t just puncture them, they disintegrate them.

I'm thinking unless it was you they were trying to get, that it's a good case for a new set compliments of local gov't budget.

Hopefully lots of pictures to submit. (plus share with us)

Sucks either way and a hassle. Hopefully not out of pocket though to replace.

Can you get reimbursed? *

I hit a pothole in a construction zone in Boston and they paid for a new wheel and tire.

* This presumes you were not the object of their attention! 😅

Wait, what??? How was that on the street unless police chase in progress? Which means there should be record of it to get reimbursed.

Just landed in Phoenix ( police called taxi so I could get to the airport to do my flight ).

Police will pay for everything ( taxi , tires ) they said. They had my car towed to my shop ( 1:30 drive ).

I will take a taxi back to my home ( 2 hour ) when I land back in Montreal at 21:00 tonight.

Not sure the whole story yet. They were after a stolen car I was told.

I didn’t take any pictures because it was dark at the time plus I was overloaded dealing with my airline ( initially told them I cannot make it, get another Captain ) and the police making arrangements.

My wife is already dealing with my car and I am not sure if the tires are even on the car anymore.

I will take a picture if I can.
