Nokian R5 winter tires, what is your experience?

FWIW now is the time for winter tire and wheel bargains. Lots of people sold a car and have them sitting around.

Be sure and measure tread depth. Lots of people seem to sell winter tires after a couple of seasons. They look good but the tread depth is well under the 10-12/32nd of new passenger tires and 14-15/32nd of light truck tires.

Unless they are really old or don’t look ok, I don’t worry so much about manufacture date. If they are kept out of UV they seem to hold up for a long time.

Nokian has a cool feature, that is their Driving Safety Indicator and their winter safety indicator... the driving safety indicator has numbers representing tread remaining in mm. The winter safety indicator is a snow flake, that wears out around the 5mm mark.

Now that I am starting on the 3rd season and have about 20-25k on the Nokian R5's on our Subaru Ascent (I believe they were about around 6-7/32" when installed this fall), they are still working very good. While I do wish they had a but more aggressive traction like some other snow tires I have ran in the past, these are still fantastic tires and provide plenty of control in all conditions. I really like the road manners on dry roads as well since they aren't as squishy feeling as other snow tires I've ran in the past. Depending on how miles we put on them this winter, I think we'll get 1 more winter out of them. At which point we'll have to see what's out there for the next set of winter tires.
