Walmart EV Charging Network - Finally Under Construction!

$0.64 per kWh
Ouch, that’s pretty pricey for DC fast charging. I’ve been experimenting with fast charging in my area while installing my L2 charging equipment at home.
For my area:
Tesla Supercharger (pretty fast, usually around 90-140 KW): Is $0.22-.42 with their $12.99 membership. $0.28-.52 without.
Electrify America (fastest that I’ve experienced, around 230-240 KW: $0.36 with their $7.99 membership. $0.48 without.
EVGo (slowest of the public DC fast chargers that I’ve found, all are 50 KW): $0.33-.50 with their $6.99 membership. $0.38-.58 without.

That's crazy. I think peak I've ever paid is 51 cents per kWh. But I rarely Supercharge.
Electrify America tries to push people into their $7/mo Pass+ membership. It generally pays for itself in the first charge.

I have about quit going to conveience stores for fuel, bathrooms and snacks. Walmarts are less expensive, the restrooms are cleaner and healthy snacks are plentiful. If when I have electric, that will be one more thing.

That's terrible.

Overall, this is like gas prices but with less transparency. I've never paid more than .35 to charge on a trip, but that's because I shop it around beforehand. Charging stations should have to prominently post their prices like gas stations. IMO.

Walmart is now past 300 sites either open, under construction, or with permits. These are actual Walmart Charging sites, not old Electrify Americas on Walmart property.

Interesting, they are building a Walmart right now in our area. I know a gas station will be there and assume a charge station.

AG, does this mean you have that snazzy new EV on order? Welcome to the Dark Side bro!
Well honestly? I would charge at home, it would possibly help visitors who want to drive here. Because there is not a fast charger within 30 minutes (or more) of our house. Last time my son was here with his BMW he charged up 1.5 hours away at a Mercedes Charger at Buc - ees

Walmart now testing “curbside” pickup at the charging stalls. Probably not needed for people doing long charges, but I could see apartment-dwellers placing a grocery order before leaving work and getting your week’s groceries and charging needs all done in 15-20 minutes.

We've had the chargers in the lots for a while and lots of EVs parked in the lot, but I've never seen anyone charging at either the Walmarts or grocery stores in our area. Most home charge.

The rates seem appropriate for the folks traveling and in a pinch. A relatively local Walmart in larger plaza has super chargers and most plates are out of state.

Also don’t they vary rate on time of use?

Everyone is high compared to Superchargers. Kwik Trip just started opening Kwik Charge here in Wisconsin and they're $0.60kWh. That's highway robbery when a Supercharger is $0.34kWh here.

It's good to know that if you're taking a trip you can check Walmarts across the route for chargers though. That's a convenience. Charge while you & tribe hit the toilet, buy edibles, and be on the way.

Im not surprised and no one else should be either. It will depend on local electric cost and return on investment in the charging stop.
I think some might be under the illusion that supercharging is cheap. If it is near you, give it a couple years to see.
Only thing is with places like Walmart getting into the game, we will see. I'll be able to give an update I think by end of summer when a new Walmart is completed in our low cost southeast costal area. :) Also will be charging of course and gas.

Traveling with an EV is project compared to gas. Another offering by any network no matter how expensive alleviated some of that.

I love EV however traveling with outside home range you need to be prepared to spend part of time and route of your vacation. When I vacation I consider costs however at same time also hassle factor dials in quick . I rent cars however sometimes pay the $15-$40 for an Uber to not deal with parking on a night out.

Absolutely. I imagine Walmart is targeting condo and apartment dwellers, which MAY be the future. It is growing here, but I understand CA has its own benefits for EV ownership.

Again; chargers have been at Walmart here for a few years now and they do get used.

I hope so because I have owned the stock Walmart since 2019. It's been a fantastic investment and amazingly well run company.
Will miss Doug McMillan who retired after 12 YEARS as CEO in 2026. This guy started out working for Walmart part time after school (or college) unloading tractor trailers. Amazing story, great company, let's hope for the best. Some of their new stores are great but the older ones still make you feel cheap walking into them. Dirty entrances etc. There is no reason for that.

Without question, priced right, super charging at Walmart can be a HUGE game changer. More so in this more (lack of better words) rural area of the NC coast. Dearth of any chargers and the ones that are around are old. Yet we are one of the fastest growing counties in the entire country and #1 in the state of NC. (dont tell anyone :)) We are noticing more and more EVs on the roads here now. It's not uncommon to see one or two on the road when we drive someplace.
We are also a tourist destination, maybe more people would be inclined to take their EVs here. As it is right now, some take their private planes to the beach location here at a small airport. Wish I had a plane and knew how to fly *LOL* Love watching them.

For those just learning this DCFC stuff, it should be noted the regular price of a Supercharger isn’t that low. That price is for Tesla owners (who paid a premium upfront with their purchase price to get cheaper charging) or those who pay the $12.99 monthly membership fee.

Regular retail prices right now in Madison/Milwaukee/Chicago are generally.

Tesla: 48¢ - 65¢ / KWh.

Kwik Charge 52¢ - 59¢

IONNA 33¢ - 39¢

Electrify America 56¢ - 64¢

EVGo 47¢ - 56¢

Same story with GM EVs (and other IONNA members). Part of their vehicle purchase price is a 10% discount at IONNA, putting it right in line with Tesla owner charging prices at Superchargers.

I actually charge at Kwik Charge often. Some of their more rural sites are by far the most convenient and fastest charging stops in maybe 50 miles or more.

And then other networks have monthly memberships to “buy down” the price too.

I even have a charger I use that charges a $4.50 connection fee! Sounds bad, but then off-peak it’s ~20¢/kWh (i forget the exact price ATM). So a long charge ends up being about the cheapest anywhere. It gets complicated….

Personally, price isn’t my main concern. I’ll gladly pay a bit extra if it means 24hr bathroom access, food, drinks, 500A+ equipment, CCS and NACS cables (no adapters needed), etc. Kwik Charge is the best for me at the moment - they offer it all, at every location.
