VW Factory 10,000 Mile OCI

It isn't the engine design. It is the recommended oil. Volkswagen calls for a 5w40 full synthetic, and the OCI is based on the factory fill Pentosin.
If you are going to run an off the shelf group III, count on 5k to 7500k intervals.

M1 0w-40 meets all these Euro specs and is capable of long drain intervals as well. A bunch of other oils, too. Pentosin isn't really anything extra-ordinary. Many oils are capable of long drains nowadays.

The TDI's use 5W-30. The VW factory fill is Fuchs. Most Euro Synthetics these days are HC Group III oils.
 
Another part of the 10k OCI that VW recommends is due to the crazy high pricing of motor oil in europe. Try 15+ euros a quart for a syn.

The big thing about VW's spec IMO is for the oil itself to not turn into sludge.

A new oil that looks interesting is Valvoline synpower 5w-40 that I saw at wally world. Had standards listed for VW, along with MB and porsche. Was about $6.75/quart though.

Try 40+ euro for SLX.
