VW 508 00 in short supply

I did not. Did you? I am replying to you. Did you see the post I replied to? You didn't even mention 508. You discussed 504 vs 502.
maybe you were too @tired to read the entire thread? ;)
and the post I was replying to?

my post was replying to earlier post
The lower number, 502, 504 VW specs are just higher viscosity than the newer, 508 The lower other numbers than 508 will be a higher viscosity. No harm to the EA888 engine.
Seems like you just jumped in and read the last post and didnt read the thread.. no wonder you are confused.

I would much prefer 504 in that engine vs 502
@edyvw might have some insight for us.

I did not. I read the whole thread.

You seem to want to write a lot about everything except just answering my question. It was a very simple question.

I guess we can start over:

There have been rumors of impending oil shortages due to the conflicts for the last month.

I just looked and BMW distribution centers have zero LL17FE+ TPT 0W-20 in stock in the USA now. Most if not all BMW dealers are out of stock already, or running on just a handful now. Not a great sign....

Which is another good reason to just go to Walmart for a LL-01 or LL-04 oil. Or a 502 00 or 504 00 oil. Several are available for a very good price.

I went to a different Walmart and they had 508 00, guess it was the just an issue at the this specific Walmart

Do yourself a favor and move to VW504.00.

It's baffling to me the people who come here for advice and get great advice from knowledgeable people, and then they go and ignore it.

Lighten up, If you must know this is why:)....I asked if there was already a shortage as I had seen reports there may be in the near future. Also car is under warranty and I will trade it as soon as the warranty is over in 4yr/50k, why on earth would I use a non approved oil. If the motor fails its on VW.

Totally reasonable and understandable. If you planned on keeping it past warranty, would you have considered 504/507? Just curious.

Yes, I actually ran that in my 2019 Q5 which also required 508 00 since it was off warranty. We have been taking some road trips and decided we wanted a newish car and not keep them as long as we did in the past.

Funny story we had a 2018 Q5 which was giving us trouble with not recognizing its key, traded on a 2019 which was the same exact car but 2018 took 50200 and 2019 took 508 00. I never even looked at oil cap! I put the 502 00 in that 2019 for many miles so I am sure those other oils would be ok but why take a chance especially that we will trade.

Wait, you and your wife didn’t die in huge engine explosion caused by thicker oil?

It was close! we were able to get behind some cover before it blew. There was a mushroom cloud you could see for miles.

By the end of this we will all be using HD30+

I haven’t seen HD40 on a shelf in decades but there were 5 quarts on the clearance shelf on my recent run, must be a sign

Just pick up some green or blue food coloring if you’re worried about the dye

why on earth would I use a non approved oil
VW 504 is approved. Is your warranty contingent on using 508? (It's not.)

I get it, if you are only keeping it short term, I guess we don't really think about the next owner.

The reason for the dye is the opposite of what you think. It's to ensure it's not used in an engine that requires higher viscosity.

508.00 also has a zirconium tracer.
