VW 502 00 & VW 508 00 in canada ???

I wonder if the government is cracking down more on what languange you use in the manual when recommending oils, I noticed in a new Hyundai manual that the only oils they had listed were 0w20 for a N/A model and 0w30 for the TGDI model of the car whereas Hyundai until relatively recently used to tell you to use anything from 5w-30 to 20w-50 in turbo cars.
Hyundai states also ACEA A5 or "higher." That does not exist.
SInce 1997 VW cannot get their oil recommendations right. In VW Atlas they had in manual one thing under the hood another, and the dealership was using third.

It’s kind of amazing how something as inherently simple as a required approval can be made so difficult given enough effort.
Ya sorry I guess being ocd. And just don't wanna buy something that will burn off easily etc

Do u remember off hand which of the above I mentioneded don't burn off easily.
That depends on oil and engine but look for oil that also has MB229.51 and/or MB229.52 specifications as evaporation loss is limited to 10%.
All oils I mentioned have very low evaporation loss (Noack). SOmetimes engines burn certain oil and not another. Try it.

Ok...

For a vehicle that uses 502, you can also use 504. For the 2017 car I would use 5w30 Mobil 1 ESP. I actually do use this oil myself, I have an RS3. I know this may be confusing with different grades, but just understand you can use any oil that says 502, or 504 on the back label. Mobil 1 is on sale this week at CT.

The 508 oil is unique, there are no substitutes and probably nothing available at CT for a couple years, because this oil is very new, only a couple years old. Best option is either the dealer or a place like germanparts.ca.

Liquimoly TopTec 6200 seems to be the most readily available VW 508/509 oil in Canada, it's $75 on Amazon and several canadian sites on google seem to carry it.

There are other 508 approved oils besides the Volkswagen branded one.

Is the castrol 5w40 502?

How about the summer months . Isn't the 5w30 not as good ? Compare to a w40

It will say on the container and on the PDS which approvals it has.

And as I noted earlier since both have the same minimum HT/HS neither one is “better” than the other in terms of grade.

This is why it is confusing - Even though they are a 30 and a 40, they are very similar thicknesses. They have to be in order to carry the 502/504 rating. Now if you went with a 30 that was not a 502/504, it would be thinner yes. At the end of the day all that matters is that the oil has 502 or 504. The grade doesn't mean much.

Castrol 5w40 is just fine. There is nothing wrong with that oil, but there are better choices if you want to split hairs.

IMO from best to worst for that car available from CT:

M1 ESP 5w30 (504)
Pennzoil 0w30 (504)
Castrol 0w40 (502)
Mobil 0w40 (502)
Pennzoil 5w40 (502)
Castrol 5w40 (502)
Motomaster 5w40 (502)

It’s not really confusing when you know what drives the approval.

So should I sit here and explain it all (or perhaps, let your Highness do it) or is it much simpler to just tell the guy not to worry about it and buy an oil that carries the approval regardless of the grade?

If he wants to do the research after that point, or has more questions, the point could be expanded upon then.

Even though you said the oil was unique.

This is why half the board has you on their ignore list. Welcome to mine. The second person in twenty years of forums I have put on ignore. Congratulations.

The 2021 Tucson 2.0 i just bought makes no mention of A5 anymore. It just states to use the most current API/ILSAC specs in 5W-20, 5/10W-30.

The Santa Fe 2.5T also makes no mention of ACEA or above. So they may have fixed that.
Incidentaly, the severe service for the turbo is now 5K miles and the normal service, 8K miles.
The only viscosity for the turbo being 0W-30.
