Hi all, have a new to me 05 honda element with 350k No apparent oil burning, valve cover was off for an adjustment and its fairly clean, just that baked oil varnish color. The cat was stolen so that is not a concern. Any suggestions to keep it going? Go straight to diesel oil, VRP, something else? Thanks.

I like using hdeo in my gas engines but I think you're good with VRP 5w-30. Rotella has a bit of a quality issue at the moment. I'd rather use Valvoline, Mag 1/ST, Castrol, or Delo in my trucks for the time being.

Is your Element a diesel? Diesel oil in a gas burning engine is a no no.
Sub optimal, but hardly a no-no. Many diesel oils carry SN ratings. Premium Blue Extreme is a 5w40 rating SN that just happens to have about every diesel approval in existence for that grade. Many Euro diesel oils are also pretty dang good "petrol" oils.

To me, the main reason to avoid diesel oils is the zero-sum nature of add packs. Every additive you put in to target one thing compromises something else. And since modern CK4 requirements are so big on soot control and dispersant, those big doses of soot management additives in my mind must necessarily compromise something like oxidative stability, wear protection, or some other attribute.

If I didn't tell you this was a diesel oil full of diesel approvals and instead just had API SN licensing, what would you think?

I'd see a <1% SAPS oil with a fairly high VI and KV100. It probably works just fine for some gas applications.

But almost certainly there another oil of identical 5w40 viscosity that is *better* for gasoline because the add pack is correctly tailored.

Thanks for all the replies all. I wasn't sure if added zinc of a diesel/ other oil might be beneficial.

These days, additive packs are all about balance. We as oil buyers need to stop thinking in terms of ingredient and thinking in terms of recipe. It's not about how much zinc or how much moly, it's about the total add pack.

no oil burning and valve train is pretty clean? Stock up on Kirkland or supertech and chug along. Any engine with 350k and no oil burning was taken care of by the prior owners
Yes, but it also is probably inside a vehicle with less life remaining than the engine. It’s ok to use cheaper oils when your timeframe is shorter. Just change frequently enough and it’ll be fine.

How well does the engine run, as far as what you notice driving with the VRP over other oils you have used?
Only thing I noticed was it started burning between 3k and 4k miles. Car did not burn prior to VRP, resolved prior to VRP becoming available. It was visible blue smoke at idle that it never did even when i bought and it was burning 2qts an oil change. So i just ran is at 3k oci's and I was using VRP, 5w30, to clean varnish off the cam lobes. Other than that it's fine, I would just not do longer OCIs with it. I do 5k oci's normally and it's normal usage is ~8oz over an oil change. Have used 5w30, 10w30, 0w40 and 5w40 oils in it for those averages. Will be using VRP 5w30 in a new to me 07 Impala 3.5l, 187k miles, after the next oil change. Didn't have any on hand so the Impala got Castrol Edge Euro 5w40 w a bottle of Rislone to start the cleaning process.

Wait, I'm confused. So you're saying that before VRP you were burning oil between 3-4K miles into an oil change? Or did VRP make it do that and then it stopped?

No burning prior to VRP. After running VRP for over 3k miles it started burning oil. Others have noticed it too. Change at 3k and call it good.
