My friend hasn't brought it by in nearly a year. I asked him why.
"Well, I replaced the battery and the maintenance light didn't come on telling me to change it out, so I figured it was good."

5 quart sump, only 2.5 came out. Probably 25k OCI. Luckily it was PP and a PureOne filter. It poured like a 20w50 when hot.

Refilled with 5 quarts M1 5w30.

I hope you gave him a good flogging....

My Maxima has a programmable tire rotation, & OCI message. I would think that an Infinity would have all the bells & whistles. Too bad for the engine because it really is a sludge monster.

If this long OCI had really caused a problem, wouldn't the "idiot lights" have came on? Particularly the Oil Pressure light(s)? Just curious....I know most cars have either an oil pressure gauge, or a light, that'll emit if something "bad" is going on with the engine; be it low oil level, blocked oil pump, bad oil pump, etc....but then again, the oil light sensors can probably go bad too :P

I wonder this all the time, I got a co-worker who also has a side job as a Lube Tech at a local Walmart TLE, and he says at LEAST once a day, they'll have a car come in with a low oil level on the dipstick....err, I mean, "low" is an understatement, I mean a "dry" dipstick level....

My question to him out of curiosity is what makes the people come in and get the oil changed? Is it the oil light that goes off, telling them to come in? Or perhaps the oil light didn't even go off, and they just decided, "oh it's been a while, i better go get an oil change" - but really, they don't have that much interation with the customers face to face, as most come in, in a rush, sign up for their oil change, then off to the "Walmart Free Lunch Line" at the Deli, where they grab some potato wedges, mac and cheese, and some cheese sticks, and walk around pretending to shop while there car is being serviced, once their name is called over the P.A., they mow down the food, trash the containers, and off to go pay for their oil change.

In and out, generally within a half hour.

Sure, they get some "concerned" customers, who will then scoff at it, "what? My car isn't low on oil! you got the wrong car?!" lol. typically older fellas

It does, but I'd guess it reset when they took the battery out.

I've never seen a VQ with sludge, but I have seen a VQ wear out because it beats up and shears the oils normally.

That's what I was thinking as well. If this is a one time occurrence, it shouldn't be a problem.

I told him max 6k from now on and that his engine is very tough on the oil. He does NOT drive old-lady style either.

No lights or warnings of any kind apparently came on.

I don't think the early G35s have it. The one on our Altima was actually OFF by default; you had to enable it or the dealer did at the first service.

I would guess that a couple quarts burned off, if it was 25k miles OCI. I wouldn't worry about it, but then again I wouldn't buy that car if it was for sale knowing what good care it received. I would love to see the filter cut open!
