New to the board, wanted to say hello to all. On the valvoline website, I put in my vehicle make and model (03 ram 4.7, 60k) They recommend 10w30 for my truck. Others, including the manual, recommend 5w30. Why would they do that? I could understand over 75k, but living in ny, where it plummets below 0 at times, I found there results suprising. Maybe 10w30 would be a good idea for oil consumption problems, or towing (which I do not do). My question is, do you think there was testing on these engines to verify there result? I'm another member here who would have sleepless nights thinking about oil, viscosity change in my rides.

First off,

to BITOG. Stick with your 5W30 if you are not having any oil consumption.

Thanks. This is a great site. I have much to learn from this board. I find myself searching through the forums for hours.

The 4.7 was orginally designed for 10w30 oil. Then the oil pump was reclearanced for the recommended 5w30. 10w30 Would not have any additonal benefeit for you imo.

I didn't think so either. Seeing the dreaded sludge/foam in the oil cap, I was curious if a higher grade oil would help prevent that, currently running 5w30 supertech synthetic with 4k oci.

How many minutes long are your daily commutes to work/school? If you're a short tripper, to vaporize moisture, you may need to make a 45 minute drive once a week.
