If Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment is so good then how come no one sells it? Pep Boys? That's it? No Pep Boys near me. Autozone, Walmart, Advance, Kmart, Sears, none of them sell it? I'm curious and I'd like to try it, but if I can't buy it anywhere then I guess I won't.

I'm curious about Neutra too, but I'm not too keen on mail order. I've read so many good things here about FP and LC that I just had to try them and I'm pleased so far, I'd rather be able to go to a store and buy them, but I guess since that's not possible I'll have to mail order them for now.

I am not worked up at all. I just do not know how you can compare the two!! They are like night and day. The synpower product is a cheap hammer aproach and is not a complete product. It has a lot of anti-wear additives and cheap viscosity improvers and not much else.

With Synpower your only information is a $19 VOA and a snot knosed call center rep. Why not contact Molakule and invite him to answere your questions. He will do a far better job then anyone else on this site. Unlike most chemist's he is really down to earth and is good at explaining things to us non-chemist!!! I know I would rather go to the source/developer first and see what he has to say.

Sorry if I came off the wrong way. In my mind it was like someone asking wich is better a quality vintage Napa Valley or Rhine wine, or say a screw cap bottle of Thunderbird!

SX-UP also has anti-oxidents wich is yet another thing that is probably missing from Synpower but who knows as you can not get a solid answere from Synpowers manufacture.

No one is saying that we should not question products!!! It just blew my mind that anyone would compare SX-UP to VSOT. I can not even find VSOT anyplace in Michigan so I have not tried it.

Anyone ever watch "Blue Collar TV". THeir was one scetch were one of the comedians dumbed a $.59 can of chili over a $1000 tin of Caviar(SP)!!! This VSOT in my eyes is the $.59 can of chili!!!

I guess I am in a better mood tonight!!!

In defense of Synpower Oil Treatment (but by no means am I trying to say it is better than SX-UP, because I higly doubt it is):

According to the Valvoline website, "When added to any motor oil, SynPower Oil Treatment's multi-action formula provides increased thermal and oxidative protection, better low-temperature protection and superior viscosity stability."

If cheap viscosity improvers, how does it produce the "superior viscosity stability" noted in the above quote from their website? Also, here is the ingredients list in the MSDS:

ALIPHATIC PETROLEUM DISTILLATES (64742-65-0): 33.0- 43.0 %
ENGINE OIL ADDITIVE: 20.0- 30.0 %
SEVERELY HYDROTREATED HEAVY NAPHTHENIC DISTI (64742-52-5) 2.3- 12.0 %
ORGANOMOLYBDENUM COMPLEX IN PETROLEUM PROCES 1.0- 9.0 %
OIL ADDITIVE
ZINC COMPOUNDS

I suppose "Engine Oil Additive" could be VIIs, but are they the cheap kind? I don't know.

It may be that the Synpower OT is a very good deal for the average guy and the average car. While it probably is not near as good a product as SX-UP, for the money if may be a fair deal.

I have to try SX-UP, but meanwhile VSOT is working great in my cars.

I just tried 5 oz VSOT + 5 oz LC20 in the Mobil 1 or Redline oil that is in my cars, and added 3 oz of FP60 to the fuel and the cars are running great.

I had to ask the local NAPA to order it Part # 066, good stuff at $4.00, IMHO.

Just wanted to throw out on other viewpoint.

I agree that Molakule is a great guy and VERY knowledgable about oils, additives, etc. I am also sure that he put all of his knowledge into formulating the best oil additive that he could create when he began offering SX-UP.

However, Valvoline does have a lot more resources than Mola does. It is possible that Valvoline knows something that he doesnt. Maybe there are things in VSOT that are not in SX-UP. Unfortunately there is no one to call at Valvoline to give us straight answers.

They both seem like good products. There is also no indication that there is anything wrong with VSOT. They both would be helpfull for an oil that did not have much Boron in it (Redline, Castrol).

Most of the other places have the Maxlife stuff on the shelf.. Probably because it runs about a $1 cheaper.. Right next to the Slick 50 ! ...argh..

I've noticed that as well, but on my last trip to Pep Boys...MLEP was $1 more than VSOT, go figure.

I'm going to take a wild guess (based on what I know of the three products) that SX-UP probably gives you most of the benefits of Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment as well as most of the benefits of Schaeffer's 132 Moly EP Oil Treatment, and maybe some other benefits too.

Is there a definitive answer as to whether or not VSOT is the same as MLEP? I cleaned out the O'Reilley's at 2.49 a bottle for the VSOT, but the MLEP is available at any Wally's. The MSDS's are the same on the Valvo site. Back on topic, I run 5 oz. of VSOT in each change of my Focus (3 qt. ST, 1 qt. M1) and have found that the oil appears to stay clean until well after 2000 miles. Before, I was approaching black at that point. Mileage is up on the average approx .5 MPG. FWIW..

If the oil looks clean the gunk must still be in the engine. Why do you think oil staying "clean" is a good thing?

I still have to stay with VSOT, which I'm pretty sure helped stop my oil consumption (not a really bad one, but it was there), which the car had for years, and of course it's a lot more affordable. For my standards, SX-Up is way too expensive, despite my "longing" to try it.

Up here in the Northwest NAPA, Shucks and others sell VSOT. No one sells the other ABOVE additives over the counter. Sorry but I am not the type of shopper that will order oil, books, food or drugs online unless I can't get it localy and NEED it. VSOT seems to have given our 98 Buick about a 5% boost in gas milage. I would love to try Sx-UP and others but there is not a distribator in my area, that I know of. Ok, I'm ready for the Shin kicking, go for it. DaveJ

DaveJ, maybe you could just try and order some SX-UP and see if it isn't the "greatest thing since multi-viscosity oils".

I use SF's AutoGlide tranny fluid in Z-1 formula, and I have to say, shipping aside, it is better than Honda's fluid, and no more expensive. I am one to view shipping as a necessary evil to get want I want as well as need.
