Valvoline Restore and Protect Fuel System Cleaner??

The new Valvoline Restore and Protect™ Fuel System Cleaner is a high-performance deposit control formulation engineered to deliver up to 100% removal of fuel system deposits in Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), Carbureted, and Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engines within a single tank of treatment, as validated through real world and ASTM laboratory testing.
This is very similar language to Valvoline Restore and Protect motor oil. Has anyone seen or read anywhere that this is the same additive in the oil being used in the fuel injector cleaner?

Or is this just Valvoline capitalizing on the name and hype of the success of the oil?

Capitalizing on the success of Valvoline Restore and Protect oil.
I've got little doubt it's a good product, but I'll need to see before/after borescope images of cylinder and valves to know for sure if it's as good or better than Techron or SI-1.

Yeah, especially knowing that it's formulated by a third party. I can't really see them delivering drums of this special additive to another company knowing the possibility the composition gets leaked. They probably want to keep all of it within their control at all times. I'm still curious to hear how it works for people.

We speculate that the proprietary ingredient that is in the oil is in the fuel system cleaner.
Here is a response I received asking a little more about the product. @Carguy2427, I would have just asked you, but I had sent this over before I saw you were in this thread.

  • "The additive is built on a new chemistry that contains both detergents and solvents. Since the formula is proprietary we can not go into a ton of detail, but can tell you in ASTM D6201 testing the additive has proven a 98% improvement over Top Tier base fuel for Intake Valve Deposits, the industry standard for GDI testing in GM LHU Injectors proved a 100% clean up in 1 tank full, and that the formula gets an A rating in corrosion protection."
Super eager to give this a try next oil change

Just put in my tank and topped off with Shell 87. My previous top off was Costco and I believe BP before that.

I ran a bottle through two of my vehicles. I'm just assuming that it did a good job lol Hard to tell. Both vehicles have been on a history of top tier fuel along with Techron or RL treatments before their oil changes. Waiting to see more on this product as use continues. Curious how their proprietary ingredients work compared to PEA, and if there is any issue with "over use" like PEA.

I used a bottle of this fuel additive at 1100 miles prior to oil change. It says it treats “up to 18 gallons”. I put it into a tank with about 16 gallons of Shell V-power 90 octane fuel (best available here), not sure what the ideal ratio would be.

I’m debating whether to continue also using a bottle of Techron complete at about 500 miles prior to oil change, as I have been for the last 40,000 miles. This engine has also been running the Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 oil for the last 15,000 miles / 1 year.

My engine did seem to have a small bit of buildup on the valves when I changed the spark plugs at 38,000. This engine uses both direct and port injectors. I have not noticed any operational problems. These pictures were before the fuel additive was used.

Glad we got you an answer quickly!

Phrasing of claims is really important so I am asking for clarification on this part:

"in ASTM D6201 testing the additive has proven a 98% improvement over Top Tier base fuel for Intake Valve Deposits"

So is this 98% improvement vs a top tier fuel that achieved less than 50mg of IVD at the end of the test (as per Top Tier requirements) or was it 98% improvement after the base fuel was dirtied up to >500mg of IVD as part of the first step in the ASTM D6201 test?

Thanks

Great base line pics @2.7ecoboostFordBronco I’ve decided to keep running Techron/Redline in addition to Valvoline Restore and Protect Fuel System Cleaner in alternate tanks since they are different chemistries. I have some cylinder/valve photos from my K24 from last July when I changed the plugs. Only about 2k miles since then but I’ll take some photos later this year as a follow up to check on progress. running Shell / Mobil fuel exclusively.

Anyone know what the shelf life of Valvoline Restore and Protect Fuel System Cleaner is when stored in a typical Florida garage? @Carguy2427?
It's a brand new product. How on earth would we know? Ask Valvoline. They are pretty responsive. They made it, so they would know.

Personally I'm not sure I'd hoard it for too long. Might as well put it in when you buy it.
