Here's another reason to change your own oil. So friday after work I decide to get an oil change. Normaly I do it myself but it's to cold and the garage floor is wet. Anyway...I go to a VIOC place to have it done...it's comical how they work but they change the oil anyways and I drive home and everything is fine. Didn't drive it yesterday but today I went somewhere and as soon as I got on the expressway I hear something clanging. I think for a minute and ahh. I bet the plate underneath is loose. My Blazer has a plastic plate underneath to protect it and it must be removed to get to the oil filter and oil pan. So I pull over and take a look. Sure as sheet it's hanging there by one bolt. SNAP???

The level of service and competence at ANY repair shop or dealer is sinking at a increasingly rapid rate, I don't care if you go to the dealer, an indy shop or yes, the always [censored] oil change place. The quality of work in my experience is pretty poor anywhere you go now and the price you pay is NO guarantee that the job will be done better.

It's pathetic really, it seems that you can't get anything done right in the USA at any price. LOL

I think the only way to have some confidence in someones' work is if you stand nearby and watch them like a hawk.

Are you talking about the oil filter access panel on the air dam?? If so, mine always pops open too.

Im an independant shop and i really try not to screw up. When i do an oil change i make sure that the filter is hand tight and the drain plug is tight. I also make sure that the car gets oil that meets specs. This can be a problem when a car calls for xxx spec and only an expensive oil like mobil1 meets those specs but the customer wants the cheapest oil i have, but that oil dont meet xxx spec.

This is on the undercarriage held on by four screws. There called a splash guard or splash pan.

I like visiting a independent in a small town local to me. I send my mother there and she gets her oil changed tires rotated for about $45 with 6 quarts of Wolf's Head Syn-Pack Dexos oil with a PartsMaster filter. I trust this shop and I think that is an excellent price for a reliable oil change with good products.

"Wolf's Head", that is a name you do not see much of anymore.

The local auto parts store I frequent stocks it in various weights and it seems to work well for us. We use 3 varieties, 10-30 in our Grand Prix, 5-30 Dexos in the Impala, and 15-40 in my old cars.

IIRC, it use to be made by the old Brad Penn refinery and that changed ownership and the "Wolf's Head" name got sold off and is being used by a company out of Florida and has no relationship to the old stuff anymore.

Yes, it's made by Amalie, I did a UOA on their 15-40 in my 2CV recently
