Seating here drinking my coffee. Wife had 2023 HRV oil change a week ago . Dealership. Free. I actually don’t have hardly any time till I retire. 12 hour days 6-7 days a week. I finally got around to checking behind them last night. They short changed the oil level. It’s just a tick above lower hash mark. It’s a 25 mile drive back to dealership through some thick ass traffic. So I’ll just get me a quart of Mobile 1 0w20 from Wal Mart and be done with it. I did look under the vehicle for a leak on the floor. It was dry. Y’all have a great post hurricane weekend. It’s wet here. Wardawg

Good Thing you checked the Oil Level.
Yep. As said, sad almost no one seems to do anything with pride or thoroughness anymore.

A side OT note, hope you didn't get a lot of flooding up there from that witch Debby. We got some rain but the weather folks had a field day with it and made a week long "breaking news" reporting out of it . Almost every field reporter had on knee high boots and full length rain gear on when the streets were just wet, and desperately looking for even a puddle to stand in.

I literally always check level one day after the oil change is done-anyone can make a mistake. Even me (I know, doesn't seem possible)! Seems like "free" oil changes always give you your money's worth. One way or another...

The Volvo dealer (Ken Garff) in Salt Lake City always overfills my daughter’s V70.

They tell her, “well, that’s because we expect it to burn oil” to which my daughter replies “my car doesn’t burn oil”.

I think I would rather it be under filled than over filled. The former is easier to fix.

Either way, I attribute this to sloppiness, not malice.

Yes. The very reason I do not take advantage of the “free” oil changes usually offered with new vehicle purchase. If ever this old saying fit, it certainly fits here: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR…
Trainees and/or halfway house type hires just to log hours worked. I would be surprised if the OP has a true Honda filter. Some of these “free” oil change deals include the really cheap oil filters.

Even the Take 5 Oil Change place has a guy that double checks before you get to pull away .

I've never been able to do it on the new vehicles we have bought, they come with the service, I just can't trust them to do it right.

Growing up in Canada, I learned that the Brahmins of the mechanic trade will fill the oil to the top of the dipstick and then just a little more. When you check the oil, you’ll see the oil level maybe three millimeters above the top hash mark, and know you were dealing with a wrencher of class.

Not to muddy waters here, but wondering if there is any chance that you checked the oil before it had time to settle in the sump?

You did the right thing fixing it yourself. I would mention it to the dealer.

Last time a shop changed the oil in one of our vehicles, the level was fine but they spilled used oil EVERYWHERE. I mean I'm not perfect, I can be messy, but these clowns gave the engine a used oil bath, and worse, did not even wipe afterward.

It's sad to think a simple thing like an oil change, done at a dealership often gets screwed up. It's also sad to think that someone who doesn't have time, or the desire to do said work has to check to make sure it was done right. Having said that the last two vehicles I bought new came with a few free oil changes, I past. Risk vs. reward and having to drive back to the dealer isn't worth it for me. Going forward I'll pass again on free dealer oil changes if offered when I buy my next new vehicle. Free is not for me if the job isn't done right and with cheap bulk oil products. I'll pick the oil, the grade, the filter and the interval.

I made a mistake once,
I thought I made a mistake, .... but I didn't.
That joke should be BANNED for over-use. (ha-ha)

And if I may muddy the waters....Sis' Mazda3i Touring came with a "Castrol Coupon" for a reduced price oil change.
I assume it provided for the use of correct oil.
I checked the level....and they got it right.
Back to the rack with my rusty machete'.
