I might of should of posted this in the mechanical section. But since I'm mentioning oil..I have a just purchased 95' F-150 300 C.I Odeometer says 243,000.it runs really good, power is good, inside valve cover is clean, doesn't have that blow-by smell.I figure it must of had work done sometime.Only thing in between gear changes, and when it gets in a pull the valves rattle,or lifters.at normal level highway speeds it's fine.I changes to pennzoil y.b 10w30 since advance had a sale with filter. The oil level is still full after about 1,000 miles.Anything to be concerned about? Thanks.

the oil filter is purolator.it does make the noise when accelrate hard.once it gets going it stops.seems it has to be in a strain to get it to make the noise, thanks.

EGR ports need to be cleaned. mine did that (accord) until i cleaned out the ports...they were clogged. now i can run 87 with no rattle. my EGR valve was working and had some carbon, but the ports leading into the intake manifold runners were completely blocked....

esplain 2 me how a valve rattles?

I never have heard that noise.

the only time you might hear a valve rattle is when your piston kisses the valve and the head of the valve breaks off and falls into the cylinder bore.

ever hear your rings flutter?

valve rattle is just a term given to whatever may be causing that noise. it is the sound you get with, i guess detonation, when you have poor gas, overheating, or clogged EGR passages. 93 octane wouldn;t even get rid of it for me---if the car was hot, and i was climbing a hill in say a parking lot--low speed, I would get that noise. when i cleared out the EGR passages, it went away no matter what gas or conditions were going on.

Joel that's what my noise is.I'm not a mechanic so lifter /valve noise is all I could come up with to describe it.I guess if it were a mechanical problem it would make the noise all the time, and I guess the engine wouldn't be running as good as it does.If it ever looks like I can get a day without rain I'l look at what you suggested.I would like to ask however can this lead to a problem if it's not addressed ?Thanks again,George

The 4.9L is a strong long lasting engine, one of Ford's best IMO. Anyway it sounds like pinging to me, I would check the timing, make sure the spout connector is disconnected (if they were using them in that year), and check the timing.

I would also give it a dose or two of a good FI cleaner, like Amsoil PI or Red Line's FI cleaner. That should solve the problem.

If it has a mass air flow sensor, most likely that is the culprit. I spent way to long trouble shooting a problem on a 4.0 with the exact problem you are describing. If it has a mass air flow sensor, remove it using the two torx screws, be careful, clean it with a spray cleaner like throttle body cleaner, or a good electric contact cleaner. By the way what you want to clean are the two coil springs at the end of the post, don't break them=$$ for a new MAF sensor. This should be a routine tuneup procedure on Fords.

I would be searching for the how-to on cleaning the EGR passages. it was addressed in my haynes manual but not as thorough as a write-up I found on line. If they have never been cleaned, I am sure they are clogged. Mine were so bad that the hole was completely closed as if a rubber plug was fitted flush with the opening.

I recently got this same thing on my new jeep jk. I only had 1400 miles or so on it with no problems then I used that new shell nitrogen gas and my motor started detonating like crazy. I asked some guys at jkowners and they said the same things these guys are either gas or exaust leak. I waited till I had 3/4 tank and put super from chevron in it and have had no problems in the last week. I think there might just be some bad batches of the new shell gas because I had only used regular since I got the car but that was the first time with the new shell. I'd be intristed to know if you used the same gas?
