Valve Lifter Noise

A friend has recently acquired an '83 Pontiac (full-size with V-8). It doesn't seem to have been over-maintained. There is an engine noise which I am pretty sure is a clicking valve lifter. If the lifter is not pumping up properly, or otherwise stuck, is this a good candidate for ARX?

Verify that the cause of the noise isn't being caused by mechanical wear.

Two bottles of Auto-Rx, properly applied, are going to be cheaper -- in dollars and/or time -- than just about anything I can think of that would "verify mechanical wear." It's worth it just to try.
