vacuum cleaner recommendation

For miele, I would recommend evacuumstore, since they always have some deals couple times per year.

There is also the cheap variant of buying a dry/wet shop vac with bags and dust sleeve, and the wand+hose+turbo attachment from one of the good manufacturers...

Miele here as well going on 10yrs. Works great and we had a yellow lab, it passed but still have two cats. The local dealer I got the Miele from said if it ever needed service that he would give me one to use until mine was fixed. Seems he offers that because it never needs anything. I get my bags off Ebay for a great price as well.

On a side note we picked up a iRobot Romba on super clearance and it still amazes me as to how much it picks up and it only runs two days a week. Helps keep the pet hair down.

That thing is beastly! Once you use a commercial vacuum everything else seems like a toy.

Buy once, cry once!

Is this vacuum heavy?

I do repairs, people give me vacuums, I've had 3 Dysons, all were no good, poor suction, hard to unclear, time consuming to repair. I've had 3 Kirbys, Eureka, Hoover, Kenmore, Shark, others, bag, bagless, Hepa.

I loved the Kirbys! But heavy. Last forever. If I have to pick one, the Shark. Nothing beats the suction and easy to unclear. The company backs their warranty. But longevity is short.

I have a Soniclean soft carpet series vac. Best I have ever used.

I have two vacuum cleaners: a Shark Navigator (upright) and a Mile "Champaigne" canister. Neither is close to perfect for me and here's my synopsis:

Miele

Pros:
- Great air filtration system
- Bags are large and very easily replaced. Filtrete after market bags work well for less $ than OEM.
- Solidly built

Cons:
- Expensive, made worse by multiple repairs needed (self winding cord mechanism developed an open circuit preventing power delivery). Power head brush lousy design resulted in binding of the brush (difficult to find replacement was about $20 from eBay, Mile only lists complete $200+ power head unit)
- Bags and HEPA filter not cheap.
- Power brush gets loaded with dog hair quickly (collie).
-Cannisters are a bit unwieldy moving from room to room.

Shark

Pros:
- Seems to have better suction, cleaning on carpet.
- HEPA filters are washable, readily available, and less expensive.
- Easy to operate/navigate.
- Relatively inexpensive
- No repairs required thus far.

Cons:
- Bagless. For me this is a huge negative. Emptying the dirt canister is a filthy, dusty. PITA. I've had two bagless vacuums and I'll never buy another. Some people like them - NOT me!
- Narrow power head means more passes.
- Mediocre performance on bare floors.
- Extension hose design is poor - any attempt to extend the hose will topple the vacuum (unless using directly overhead).
- Brush loads up with dog hair quickly.

A Shark with the Mile filtration system would be ideal for me. I've researched and I concluded that any vacuum will have shortcomings and your choice is a balance of compromises.

I bought a ~$50 Bissell powerforce helix bagless. It's our first bagless unit and works great for us.

I'm done spending $400 on vacuums where the bride and kids destroy it, loose parts, dog chews parts, etc.

I would go over your vacuum and see if there is something stuck or broken. Hover makes a good vacuum.

Look at Consumer Reports, as they are always testing and rating vacuums.

For normal household pile carpet you need one with a good beater bar.

We use a Hoover cordless for all the tile and bare wood. But a more heavy duty vacuum for the carpet.

Bath the dog more often or perhaps a change of diet?

Only choice for us last month was cordless cordless cordless. Have a conventional corded 120v AC canister and filter bag type by Kenmore that works very well that was hers at her house before we married, but it is a beast to put into action and maneuver. Big bulky and ungainly, and always that thick AC cord in the way. No thanks. Was time to go cordless. The only cordless that seemed to be worth it for quality, suction power, and convenience was the Dyson brand. We picked up a Dyson V10 Motorhead for $249 shipped. Our house is 1797 sq ft and it's run time is adequate. Three suction power modes. High has so much suction you have to push hard to move it around on a shag area rug in living room. I did an experiment. Vacuumed that area rug on lowest power setting, the one it runs the longest and can almost make the advertised 60 minutes of run time off the lithium battery. Noted amount of fod contained in the transparent canister. Emptied. Went over the same area rug 2nd time on max power, the idea being that if max power pulled more junk out that would mean low power setting didn't get it all out the first time. The high power run didn't pull hardly anything else out, and it has at least double the suction as low mode, based on putting your hand at the nozzle. So the first session on lowest setting was all that was needed to thoroughly vacuum an 8' x 10' shag area rug. The tufts on this shag I'd estimate to be about 3/4" long, density about average for what you'd find in a $300 8' x 10' from Lowe's. So that experiment proved to us the V10 was a good purchase for the money.

We'll see how long it lasts. Build quality and finish appear to be very good for the price point, as does the performance as described above. Probably come down to how long the battery lasts, i.e. quality of the lithium batteries Dyson is using which I'd wager are likely of chinese manufacture, although I don't know.

Reason we went cordless is because we just weren't vacuuming often enough due to the hassle of dragging out the beast and fiddling around with the cord and all that.

At my former house I had a Shark upright rotator pro something-or-another that I got for $278 at wal mart in 2013. It lasted 5 yrs before the rollers on the floor head wore out and fell out, and the suction hose fractured and came apart at the handle end. Suction hose and handle are a unit assembly and would cost about $70 to replace, same with the suction head where the roller clasps or mounts fractured-- one piece unit to replace, $99 or so. Disposable consumer product just like everything anymore. Not worth repairing.

I'm assuming this is in regards to a bagged unit?

This is one of the reasons I love our cheap bissel bag-less. You dump the container after each use and the house doesn't smell like a petting zoo.

Consumer reports rated the Shark NV586 as the best upright. It has a brush on/off feature $400
The Meiie's swept the canister ratings from the Complete C3 ($1100) to the C3Alize, C1 cat/dog, and Compact C2 Electro+
For Stick vacuums the Shark LZ601 , ZS362 HV 380.381,382 and ZS360 corded were tops.

You should look at their ratings.

+1. Another vote for Dyson. Best vacuum we have ever had, going on 8 years old.

Many moons ago when I was laid off one summer a friend talked me into going with him selling Kirby's door to door, this guy could sell matches in [censored] and I have to say of all the vacuums we've had over the years they had the best suction. We never did own one but I brought a demo home to use but back then one was $1200 for the base unit, no thanks. The Kirby he had at the time was self propelled so it was easy to use, the old one my mom had not so much.

Fast forward and a couple Hoover's and Eureka''s later we bought a Shark and it rivals the Kirby in suction, they just had to make the head smaller to do it so ya as one mentioned more passes.

If money is no object, Miele. I still use a 20 year old Powerhouse series upright at my apartment. My friends who own Dysons love them and they aren't made in China but I think they are overrated.

My parents buy whatever Costco has on sale - they gotten 10 years of service out of a Eureka Boss series - and Eureka is panned by Consumer Reports even when Electrolux owned them. Midea who makes Toshiba TVs owns Eureka now.
