Vacuum Cleaner Parts

Hi folks,

I have a rather ancient Eureka 2086 D vacuum cleaner that, for better or worse, has managed to hang in there over the years. I've gone through countless bags and belts, but it's still running. Fortunately, F&G size bags and the appropriate belts are still available at shops like Wal-Mart for remarkably low prices, so I have no reason to upgrade.

Several years ago, the translucent cover over the light bulb and light bulb itself have gone missing (I have no idea where they may have ended up), and I'm finally getting around to replacing them. Any idea where I can get the right sized bulb? The Eureka website doesn't list any of the available light bulbs as fitting this vacuum, and I can't seem to find the translucent covers anywhere.

Additionally, does the vacuum need any sort of routine maintenance (e.g. oiling moving parts)? It seems to be in solid working order, with no strange sounds or smells, but I'd still like to keep it running as long as possible.

Contact Eureka directly via phone. They keep parts like that lying around or can point you in the right direction of what would be compatible.

Probably not the answer that you want but..

My local Big Lots got a truckload of Eureka refurbished vacuum cleaners in the other day. They are factory refurbished, they come in plain brown boxes. I picked up a bagless unit with a HEPA filter for 45 dollars plus tax.

I'm very happy with the thing so far. Cleaning it out is a bit of a pain. Once a week you need to empty the canister, then clean out two other filters and inspect the HEPA filter.

Its a job for outside (very dusty)..

If you are going to order parts for an old cleaner, wny not just get a new one at that point?

I don't like bagless ones. One has to empty them every use, while the bagged ones last months before changing.

Secondly, the vacuum works just fine. It's only needed bags and belts over the years, and works well. Pretty much everything is metal, and lasts forever. I just need a new light bulb (which I've purchased and replaced) and a plastic lens cover and the vacuum's in perfect working order.

Thirdly, most new vacuums seem to be made of plastic. I suspect that they wouldn't last nearly as well as this one.

Finally, it's a bit silly, but I've had this vacuum my whole life. My folks bought it when I was a kid (if not before, I don't recall), and it's been in the family for a while.

I'd check parts vendor online or ebay, they are usually cheaper.

If you can't find the replacement part for your vacuum, try buying a cheap headlamp (Petzl's are nice). For ten or fifteen bucks you can get a pretty nice one that comes in handy for many other jobs and emergencies. Here's a few:

I have a buddy at work who has a vacuum cleaner with hard-to-get bags. He cuts the bottom off the bag, empties it (outside, of course) and fold & staples the bag shut. He gets a few uses out of each bag that way. Interesting cost saving measure. Just thought I'd add that.

This vacuum takes common F&G-style bags, which are widely available at mass merchandise stores like Wal-Mart for a low price. No need to reuse them.

As for the parts, Eureka replied with the part numbers and put me in contact with a local vacuum cleaner supply store (much greater selection than any big-name store, with good prices). They had the bulb I needed, but will need to order the lens cover. Evidently Eureka still makes them. Go figure.

Try to find a local vaccuum & sewing machine shop; they usually stock or get you the necessary part. I still use Hoover Convertible which I purchased in 1982! I have replaced few internal parts on it over the years by buying parts from local vaccuum shop.
