I plan on changing out the diff oil in my Camaro and Silverado tomorrow of the next day. I have a can Then Right Stuff which John Browning reccomended and a factory made paper gasket. I would like to use both the Right Stuff and the paper gasket. I plan to put a bead of TRS on both sides of the gasket and then blot it all back together. I know TRS cures very fast so I will have to work fast. Does this sound like the best way to do this? This is my 1st differential I've done and dont want to have it leak at all! Thank you for any input and help!

P.S. The container does not say but is the Right Stuff compatible with Synthetic grear oil(mobil 1 75w30)?

I would not use a paper gasket. Not only do you not need it but it will actualy increase the chance of leakage. Today most companys use either RTV like compound or they use a gasket cut from neoprene, nitrile or silicone. This is especialy true on the diff. I do not think that anyone uses anything other then RTV from the factory. In the old days before RTV you would use gasket schalac with the precut paper gasket or a cork gasket. Make sure you cut the tip small and completly circle the bolt holes.

Also make sure you torgue the bolts in the right pattern and to the right torque spec.

Thanks John! The torque is 30lbs. Should I use a cross pattern like a star when I tighten them up?

Yes, use a cross pattern.

BTW I use Dana/Victor Reinz gaskets for the rear end. They're cork with a steel shim core. Just apply them DRY.

They're re-usable and I've used them on all of my rear ends w/ zero leaks so long as you torque down the bolts properly.

I've grabbed them out of the trash and uncrumpled them and they still seal better than Fel-Pro rear end gaskets.

RTV is too much of a hassle for me - it's a PITA to clean when changing the gear oil. That scraping is a real waste of my time. With the Victor Reinz, I just remove the gasket, change the oil, re-use the gasket or get a new one, and refill. Bada bing bada boom. Done.

Thank you the replys! I wonder if the Right Stuff has this problem with the 75w90 synthetic? I;ll try to find the Dana/Victor Reinz gasket just to be safe!

Well I called around and no one has the Dana/Victor gaskets. I'm just going to use the The Right Stuff. I can not find anything that says it is not compatible with synthetic oil just that is is oil resistant!

GM has a TSB out on the use of RTV gasket materials and synthetic oils, says to use gaskets as some of the RTV's can react with 75W-90 synthetic lubes. They corrected this in production by switching to gaskets.

I would use the gaskets as that is what is there from the factory.

Follow THIS LINK and look at the topic "rear axle lubricant compatibility". While this is dated April 2000 is stil holds true today.

btw-You need Acrobat Reader to view it.

FWIW, I have used the orange Permatex brand silicone with Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 gear oil without any problems. Has been over two years with no leaks whatsoever. Chrysler uses what appears to be the orange permatex from the factory.
